I tend to run anywhere from a 78t to 87t spur with 16t to 18t pinion on 55t motors in my pede's and they all work well with that setup. I am currently running 2 pede's with 84 spur and 16 pinion. Make sure your gear mesh isn't to tight.

It depends on whether you want more wheel speed or more torque. A higher number spur will create more torque, just like a lower number pinion will, and vice-versa. I just used the 84 because I already had it, and had some pinions to match. For some reason I have found that not all 48 pitch gears are the same. For example; Tamiya gears do not mesh with axial or traxxas gears.
