Default My first ever TLT build, "Ballistic"

Finally after 6 months of scouring the rccrawler.com forums for all the info I could find on building a TLT crawler, I've finally completed it!!

Much of it was built with the inspiration of Brad's (AKA Bender) TLT builds.

Say hello to my "Ballistic" TLT!

Features:
TLT axles, locked
Bender SW2 chassis and upper link mounts
Pede tranny, locked and fitted with 84/12 gearing
Integy 55T Lathe motor
Maxx lower links
Custom shortened upper links (unknown brand)
Maxx shocks
Maxx sliders and yokes
Losi white springs on front, yellows on rear
Pede rims, double narrowed
Masher 2k tyres, no foams
Unimoger rock rings
G-Made wheel wideners
Tamiya TEU-101BK ESC (cheapie, but does the job!)
TowerPro servo
JR RS310 receiver

The shell is a Proline Chevy C10, painted with Spazstix hard anodized green. I've never seen this colour used before so I thought I'd try it, and its come up an absolute treat! My friend Ash painted it with his air brush, and backed it with Faskolor silver metallic.

It sits on shortened Duratrax body posts, which I side mounted.

I've mounted it up high enough so it wont rub too much, cos I couldnt bring myself to cut the body up. I'm still going to have to trim it slightly around the wheel arches, but nothing major.

I still have to narrow the rear wheels and mount the rock rings properly onto them (the rears are stuck on for the photos, the fronts are bolted on properly), but apart from that its pretty much ready to go!

Sorry about the poor, quickly taken photos. I'll snap some better ones when I hit the rocks

Thanks to Scott (Fozzy Down Under) and Brad aka Bender, for his assistance during the build.

Also, many thanks to the SEARCH button for helping me out

Thanks for the kind words everyone

Today I completed the two rims I hadnt narrowed or rock ring'ed yet, and I also stuck some lead weights around the front rims, to keep the weight forward.

My battery pack should arrive next week, I sent the old one back under warranty, but when I get the new one, I'll be hitting the rocks and getting some decent photos ;)

My long awaited update!!

This is my VERY first time rock crawling ;)

There is a serious lack of rocks near my place, but there is endless piles of rubble, busted up tiles and wood, and bricks in a new housing estate, where hundreds of homes are being built as we speak

I like to call it "urban crawling" ;)

A few crappy camera phone photos, cos I didnt think to bring a camera with me...

My thoughts on crawling..

Its not as easy as it looks, but once you nail it, its rewarding, and a helluva lot of fun!

Its hard on the truck....its hard on the shell, hard on the tyres, hard on the drivetrain, and hard on anything thats exposed to hitting any obstacles such as the diff housing, suspension links and skid plate. The rock rings get beaten up too.

One battery pack lasts a long time with a 55T motor. I went out for 30 mins then ran out of light, and it still showed no signs of slowing down with my 3000mah pack.

My truck, as expected, needs to have a few things sorted after its first crawl:

- The rear steer lock out is a bit flimsy, the rear wheels can still be forced to turn if they are pushed up against something hard.

- The front steering link is the first thing to get hung up on a rock, it needs to be relocated.

- For some reason my steering goes better right than left, not sure why but I'll have to sort it out.

- At full articulation, the tyre rubs on the shell slightly so I'll have to trim the body a bit more.

Thats about it!! I'm very impressed with how it went, and 6 months of hard work building it really paid off

Gotta agree with you there, the C-10 is one of the best shells for a crawler in my opinion, thats why I got one for my first crawler ;)

Looking good man!

I just bought a Chevy C10 body today! I knew it would be the first body for my TLT Crawler from day one!
