| driveshaft problem
hello all i finished building my sw2 and i drove it on my driveway when the plastic yoke snaped i replaced it snaped it again driving just in my driveway replaced it and snaped the rear. i have metal yokes on the axle end and plastic yokes on the tranny end. i have these driveshafts http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LXSP55 these metal yokes http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LXJG59 and these plastic yokes http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LXJJ77 they way i mounted them was buy driling out the u joint in the metal yoke like this 2nd i filed down the red part of the u joint to fit inside the yoke like this 3rd so now i have the metal u joint filed down to fit into the metal yoke i taped the pin out and lightly hammered it in through the side of the metal yoke. 4th then i filed down the other 2 u joints so that they could fit in the plastic yokes. 5th i finished the metal yokes and the plastic yokes so i popped the drive shafts on and installed them with the grub screws on the axle. i did not drill through the pinion. i just used the grub screws and on the tranny end i just used the grub screw aswell. my question is did i do anything wrong? if i did is that why my plastic yokes didnt hold for very long? i havent really driven my sw2 but it gets great ariculation could this be the cause? too much articulation putting too much stress on the yokes at both ends and since one side has a a plastic it gives way and breaks? my driveline angles arent steep at all. and i have seen a lot of people who run metal yokes on the axle side and plastic yokes on the tranny side with no problems i know this is a long post but im very frustated and im anxious to be able to drive my rock crawler thanks for the help |

You shouldn't have to grind down anything. If you are using stampede sized stainless yokes and stampede sized plastic yokes, something is wrong if you have to grind stuff. Getting the yokes connected to the driveshafts is a little tricky but doesn't require any power tools. I am afraid you may have ruined some very expensive yokes there my friend. kevin |

so i should have just been able to just pop the drive shafts onto the metal yokes? so did i buy the wrong drive shafts? when i tried to fit the driveshaft over the u joint i wouldnt fit at all. the drive shaft was wayyy to big compared to the metal u joint. so does anyone have a link to different drive shafts that would just slip onto the metal yokes? i bought these http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LXSP55 and according to Tuffguy these are the wrong ones so are you not suppose to try to make those u joints fit into the metal yokes? was i suppose to buy these http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJJ82&P=7 Last edited by iwantoffroad; 07-17-2006 at 12:22 AM. |

i run the maxx shafts in my truck because i dont think the pede shafts are strong enough the reason why your breaking stuff is because the small white yokes are too weak. i modified maxx yokes to fit by just grinding them down a little then chamfering the side that meets the pede tranny. now pede diff internals are available that are pre drilled to accept the setscrew/pins

True, they aren't as strong as Maxx shafts, but, I kinda prefer running the pede shafts as the weak link in my drive line, these are much easier to replace than an inner axle, ring and pinion, or idler gear in the tranny. since you did drill the little pivot thingy out of the metal yoke, you will probably have to buy new yokes now to be able to use the pede shafts... :( |

Are those longer than the stock pieces or are they only drilled for the screw?

only drilled. the important thing is that they arent hollow like the original ones were... they do greatly facilitate mounting maxx yokes. (a good amount needs to be ground off the maxx yoke)

Why can't he reuse the metal joints? Just push a new pin through the drilled out part and it should be ok right?
