I had a problem with the three tiny screws that hold the two parts of the diff together backing out and it would make a clicking sound.

your ring and pinion are stripped. Time to get some new ones and shim them this time you install them. Prolongs the life of the gears greatly.

I did the same thing this weekend.
Ordered new gears from Tower.
It's got to be the dif gears..
This may seem like a dumb question,
but how does one shim the gears?

you shim the pinion in towards the ring gear to get rid of the slop, thus increasing gear mesh

I had a strange clicking in one of my diffs, and it ended up being one of the pins that holds the spider gears. It broke, and slipped out of the carrier and was contacting the housing. I pulled the pin out and i am still running it that way. I think my JB weld job failed and is allowing some play, which broke the pin.

I think mine was the rear, but a buddy just shredded his ring gear in the front this past weekend.

I've had the screws back out and broke two of the pins and it still works. Hey Jerod does Sheldons sell they shims? If so I"ll stop by there on friday and pick some up. You working?

Make sure you pack the crap out of the diff case with grease.

I work at a bikeshop and found some shims we use to shim MTB disc brake calipers to the proper position. These ended up working perfectly to shim the pinion closer to the ring gear. I only used 1 per pinion, works great so far
