Default TLT-10 overhaul

it didn't take long for the stock belt drive to show its true character. Even with a tensioner it slipped and chattered like a squirrel on crack. so out it came, but what to replace it with?

thought about a Pede tranny, but the idler gears are fragile in those, so i looked to my E-Maxx for inspiration (actually for some measurements).

adding about 3/16 to the width of the truck allows the E-Maxx tranny to slip right in. a little hacking on the side plates completes the install. a Traxxas 70 tooth spur gear fits between the side plates, and a 4-Tec spur gear adapter eliminates the slipper clutch. I cut up a pair of Maxx chassis rails and used the center sections to mount the box to the side plates. Had to relocate the front upper arms to the outside of the chassis, as there's no room for the crossmember with the new tranny.

the new tranny hangs down about 3/8 inch lower, which kind of sucks. but having a 2-speed rules. and with a single Titan motor, it should last forever. and there's a lot less friction than with the belt and tensioner.

tested today and WOO HOO does this thing climb.

Default pics!

underside view. you can see the frame rail stubs and the underside of the battery, which has 4 up and 2 down. the Max Climber body posts are mounted upside down and the battery strap is used as a sling.

kind of dark, but you can see how the E-Maxx motor plate comes thru the slot for the gear. a little hacking makes rom for the motor. you can see the relocated upper links in this pic as well.

rear view. again kind of dark, but you can see the 2-speed linkage, made from a TLT rocker arm. the servo sits horizontally in the original motor opening, and the receiver sits on top of it, on the outside of the chassis plate.

wheelbase is 11" at normal ride height. those are BRP TC3 side wings used as rear body mount perches.

also upgraded the front steering tie rod with Traxxas 116mm turnbuckle #5139. a perfect fit and lots beefier than stock.

oh, and with the 2000 mAh battery, it runs for about a half hour.

the 2 speeds are slow and "geez, is this thing running?" but it will climb like a mad monkey. still working on the wife to get the big rock pile for the back yard

yeah, it is a little tippy. i'm thinking that flipping the battery over will help.

the cool thing about these trucks is, they're never finished

the chassis plates are stock, with a few extra holes. i had to make longer crossmembers and a custom deck plate to mount the esc and hold the battery down. no more than about an hour's worth of Dremel work.
