Got started on my roof rack today, using 1/8th rod and a wirefeed welder. Not even close to finished but I thought I would post some progress pics. I am not a good welder but learning as I go. The first pic is what I am modeling after.

More done on the rack this afternoon..............ran out of rod so I started on the lights. You can also see the lower hoop for the basket sitting on the supports, it is not welded yet. Need the rod to finish it before it gets welded in place.

Thanks Romulus, got some more pics for you.

The rack is now painted and instaled. Just need some led's and build some scale extras to go in the rack. Let me know what you all think.

Thanks for the input, you seem to be the only one watching this one lol. I agree, I looked at the ones that are available and even some simple designs that I have made before and just was not happy with the look. Sooooo............ Gooogle jeep roof rack and start looking, after seeing several different variations on this theme I decided to try and weld one up. I am not a good welder to start with and I had never tried something this small so it was a learning experience. I will use the welder again for sure just because you don't have the issue of heat bleading into finished brazed joints and popping them loose if you are working in tight areas. The hardest part was positioning things so they stayed put till the tack weld was done.

Glad you made a true scale rack for this. Too many just tack the Pro-Line rack on the roof, well in real life that fiberglass roof will crack. A good place to search Jeep stuff is Quadratech. My girlfriend jokingly refers to the catalog as porn:mrgreen:

Thanks, I had the same line of thinking on the racks and that is what brought me to this. Thanks for the info on Quadratech, I will have to check it out.

Not sure about making these to sell, not as perfect as I think it should be.

No problems at all, first feedback I heard on them was that some rear axle trimming was in order. When I got mine they just bolted up. You do need to ditch the hex and just use the pin but there has been no durability issues with that setup so far.

Sorry about the triple post guys, I can't seem to figure out how to reply to more than 1 post in a reply.

I felt that the rack needed a soft side "stuff" carrier so this is what I came up with.

romulus22 12-20-2009 08:53 PM

Yeah, you are right, I have smaller zip's that are smooth and would look more like the correct strap system but they were not long enough. I am looking into what else to use because the big zip that is on there doesn't look right. I would like to make straps but have not sorted that out yet. Thanks for the input. "thumbsup"
