Default June 20th First Comp....UPDATED 8-9-09

Well my LCC worked GREAT at the first comp I used it at. The only issue I had was motor heat. I smoked the motor 2 times but it kept on working. Once the comp was complete I was driving around doing some different lines and the motor smoked out a 3rd and final time. It was so HOT that before I could pull it from the truck the pinion had melted the spur. I was running a 27t arm in a 35t can with a 14t pinion. I broke 1 cv axle but that was from a pretty hard fall onto 1 wheel.

Other than those issues I was really impreesed with my LCC and took 1st place at the comp.

So all in all a GREAT event for myself seeing as how I usually finish mid-pack....

.. to Losi for building an AWESOME rig.....

Good job at the comp. What motor are you going to use next? maybe a brushless. I still can't make up my mind what to put in mine.

Was that 2s or 3s?

and glad to know the losi survived the comp with minimal damage. I'm planning to comp mine on the 28th with minimal tweaks, kinda of a baseline. After that I think I'm going custom chassis.

The motor I am going to run next is the Traxxas Titan with a 12t pinion. I am using an Xcite 11.1v 1350mah. I was very happy with the end results other than the motor issues, hope the Titan will help there.

Default Updates....

Well I replaced my spur gear today and installed the Titan with a 12t pinion. What a difference. There is much more punch right off the start and the wheel speed is good. I was running for a good 45 minutes and the motor never even came close to HOT as before. Temped the motor and it was at 125 degrees. The more the truck breaks in the better it is getting. I am learning how to use the dig more and when to use it and the LCC just keeps impressing me.

As stated, you really need to learn to use the dig. At first I was using it but now I am USING it. When doing tight turns I was staying in the throttle too long, building excess heat in the motor. Now I have learned to blip the throttle when needing to turn tightly, this cuts down on the heat. Also when the axles, mainly the front, seems bound that is a good time to use the dig. You can still get in the throttle when needed but I feel as tho prolonged high revs is what was causing alot of my heat issues.

What about a heat sink on the motor?

The 550 is a pretty tight fit. I have been running Emaxxes for years and have never run heatsinks. We beat the hell out them too. Usaully running at Monster Truck shows and running multiple packs thru them continuosly. Have never burnt up a 550 motor but have smoked a few battery packs.

It was about 80 degrees here today and no wind where we were crawling so I think the 125 degree motor temp is very good. When I ran the 27t motor it got EXTREMELY hot in a very short time and it was cooler and windy as well.

So far the 550 is the best motor. I started with a 35t...SMOKE, then the 27t arm in the 35t can...SMOKE. After a 45 minute runtime and a temp of 125 I am liking this combo.

The fan on the motor does make a difference. Friend and I were running our LCC's yesterday with the same setups, on the same rocks doing the same lines, etc... I measured my motor temp @ 121f and his was 140f... 20degree difference. I run a fan, he does not, and I think I'm more heavy handed on the throttle than he is as well (I've broken 3cvd's, he's broken none!). I should mention that the Ambient temp outside when we were crawling was 113f so the temps of the motors being relative to the ambient was not very hot at all.

HA! HA!

Yea the Losi should have come with a 550 and a 12t. A bit of research on Losi's part would have made a much better launch.

I was just going to say something about that, lol.

I was looking at fans on ebay and the cheapest ones are like $4 shipped for 3 racing ones from hong kong or whatever, how would you go about wiring a fan though?

There is a guy in California selling those same 3 Racing 5V fans. Being they are 5v, they can run off the RX power. Just be aware that you're going to be drawing more A out of your ESC at that point. I personally would wire in a 12v fan to your ESC's battery connector and run it direct. That does mean you have to unplug to get it all to shut down, but you should be doing that anyways so as not to kill your lipo by forgetting its plugged in. I run a 50mm fan up top of the chassis, and I've ordered a few 40mm 12v fans that should be here next week. 40mm should fit down right on the motor for the most part. The stock Losi fan in the pics above is a 30mm Fan like the 3 racing ones. If you search ebay for 30mm fans, you'll get a bunch, even some 12v ones. Look for high CFM (5+) and low Amp draw .8 or lower.

and yeah, 113f is hot
