But how does it run? Is it just the ESC getting hot, or does the motor get hot also? Is it a LCC or LNC? How much timing are you running? What are your current settings? What battery are you running? How long is 'right away', immediately or 5 min?

Without any more info I still feel that the ESC shouldn't get hot if the motor doesn't!

If the motor has a short circuit the ESC might run hot and the motor will run crappy.

ok, so its a night crawler, stock gearing, tekin rs with tekin 17.5 brushless running 3cell, 0 timing, o brake, basic settings, motor is cold but esc get hot quick, 5 min tops, not sure if I should change gear ratio, 20 tooth on motor.

Even more probable that my initial suspicion is correct: A short circuit, either in the motor or at the output on the ESC.

Great setup, that gearing is what I run. If gearing was off the motor would be getting hot.

Stupid question, but easy to do...I have. With the posts on the ESC so close together, did any solder connect between the posts - or at the motor. That might have catastrophic results, but not sure. I fixed mine before I powered up.

Also is the cap on correctly, or is it blown? maybe.

Just thinking out loud.

Just did some reading in the manual. It's been a long time since I looked at it, I actually relearned some things.

Are you getting any LED flashes? The RS has a temp indicator, is it telling you anything?

If #3 and #4 LEDs are flashing that means a shirt circuit (like OlleP, stated).

Here is the manual. Instructions for the temp indicators and descriptions for the LED error code indicators are at the very bottom left of the second page.

Hope this helps.
