| Trimming foam to fit wheel weights?
Got some new TSL swampers with foams in them, I would like to add a bunch of weight to the wheels. The last set of wheels and tires I added weight to, the foam seemed to fight me quit a bit. Do you guys trim your foam on the inside to get them to seat better? Seems with all the extra space the weights are taking up you should trim the foam a little. Any pics showing this would be great! Thanks |

Yes, you should trim the foams. I use either a dremel with a sanding drum attachment or an air die grinder with a sanding drum attachment. It will make the foams perform properly and reduce the bounce from over stressed foams. |

I use the plastic wire brush thingy that came with my dremel to notch the foams. Usually I just do two runs around the inside of the foam to cut the edges, spaced apart and just deep enough to let the weights fit. Then its just a matter of pinching the foam and tearing it free. Easy peasy. |

I cut the foams as-is. I'll see if I can get some pics for you later today. |

I layed my wheel with the weight on it on top of the foam marked it with a fine point marker and cut it out with a razor blade. I don't have any pictures of any of it but I don't really know what you would take a picture of anyways. The memory foams were alot harder to cut than the foam ones but if you take your time it works out good. I just wish they would hurry up with the dual stage units for the Claws.

I made myself a hot-wire cutter that sliced through foam like a ....hot knife through....butter?? I found myself needing to get some larger diameter foams and also found myself in a state of impatience and wanting another project, so I made the hot-wire cutter as a sort of lathe set-up. Used a power source box, some nichrome wire, various plumbing fittings for the arm, abs plastic board as a base to work from and started cutting. Used an old camping mattress that used memory foam as a sort of self-inflating set-up. Not the best stuff, just what I had lying around..... Admittedly it won't give the neatest finish, but it did the job for me. Got exactly the O.D I wanted, and by un-doing the wire, passing it through a small hole in the centre of the foam, I got to cut the I.D so I got a foam ring without having to glue any joins With all this in mind, I'm sure notching the foam to star-cut, add cut-outs around weights what-ever would be easy. Not neat and all professional like, just easy. |

Here's the dremel tool I use, its a plastic brush. And here is a foam that I grooved. I've done it on memory foam, Rover foam, Nova foam, and F400 foam. Works great. |
