Pretreating/cleaning can be useful on certain rock conditions. Most people use simple green to clean their tires before runs. This gets all the dust and debris off the tires and actually makes the tires a little tacky.
Does it help? Certain rocks are dusty all the time and cleaning the tires is counterproductive in these conditions. On very smooth, slick, and clean rocks, cleaning is a good thing.

I rarely clean my tires anymore. I feel its not necessary for me and where I compete.

Some people think that the simple green leaves a tacky film on the tires, it kinda does, but it picks up dust like crazy.

Simple soap and water cleaning is how I clean my tires anymore if I want to clean them. I do keep simple green in my crawler bag though for touch ups if I get a bunch of mud/dirt on them. Keeping them clear of dirt and mud is the most important thing. Dust is not that big of a deal to me anymore. All the places I compete at are pretty dusty anyways.

If you compete in dusty dirty areas, Cleaning is not that important. But if all the rocks in your area are clean, then cleaning them wont hurt one bit! Clean tires let the rubber do its job!

Nope, that is Naptha. Kinda dangerous. Any petroleum based solvents would likely make the rubber swell and break down.

I'd stick with soap and water or simple green.

A set of cleaned boss claws on carpet equals some nasty traction
