Default Cheap 2 stage foam for heavy trucks.

I did this a while back and forgot to document it with pictures, so bear with me. I am sure CI foams would have done but the wife had me on lock down for hobby $$ so I had to improvise.

So my scaler weigh in at just under 12 lbs which is a bit heavy for a 1.9 rig and I wanted some specific things to ensure some decent performance out of it. I have the standard 1.9 proline SS tires and those come with a massively oversized memory foam insert. which is also way too soft for basically 12 lbs.

So on to the easy fabrication. Get a pool noodle, they are about a dollar or two this will be used for the inner foam core. I believe it to be closed cell polyeurathane foam.

First, I carefully cut off four 1" slices for each tire. I used a sharpie to make the cut marks all the way around the noodle and then slowly cut with a sharp utility knife to avoid jagged edges.

Then, I used a 2" hole cutter (that came with a hand drill I bought years ago) and, by hand opened the inner hole, being careful to stay centered, and turned the hole cutter back and forth until I was through the slice.

Next, I centered and traced the noodle slice onto the memory foams then manually cut those inner rings out with a small and sharp pair of scissors. This left me with matched inner and outer foams.

Slipped the noodle slices inside the memory foam outers and stuffed those bad boys inside the swampers and bolted down the beadlocks and voila! $2 for a 2 stage foam that works perfectly!

hope this helps someone out there who is trying to do this on the cheap.

Before the mod (and paint, cage, driver and 2 lbs lighter)

...and after.

The tires end up still very soft at first but don't fold over all they way like they used too. also they give a much more realistic "low pressure" look which I think is quite cool.

I use the black pipe wrap insulation you can get at Lowes or Home Depot. I glue them with contact cement.
