Default CI foams and acetone?

I bought a set of glued wheels with CI Dueces Wild foams inside..the tires and foam combo are what I want, but the glue on wheels need to go. I'd like to separate the wheels from the tires with a soak in acetone.

I assume the closed cell foam will be ok, just wondering if anyone has feedback before I possibly melt down 2 sets of foams...

Thanks in advance!

Jeezus no! Do not soak the tires in acetone! Just dab some on the bead area with a q tip and let it soak for a few minutes. There is also this really neat stuff I picked up from hobbytown called un-cure that does the same thing but has no effect on plastic or foams that I've found.

Had zero luck with uncure.... (and the directions say to wipe with acetone anyway)

What's wrong with soaking in acetone? Have done it several times with excellent results.

Wiping with acetone is one thing, soaking a tire & wheel combo in it is another. Acetone will eat certain plastics, gmade comes to mind as one of the wheels that gets ruined by it.

If uncure didn't work for you you either didn't use it right/enough or you were trying to remove factory glued tires which are easiest removed with a razor blade anyway. That is a different glue than common CA and it's gnarly.

You can boil the tires and wheels for awhile, this will break the glue down and not hurt the tire, wheel or foams. Obviously use a pot you don't cook with.

If you have an old toaster oven the "bake off" method has always worked well for me and caused no harm.

Aware it will eat ABS. I melted a set of Tamiya rims in the learning process. Those kinds of plastics will warp with boiling too. These rims are nylon, should be fine.

Well, there's always a guinea pig... I'll give it a go and see what happens.

I vote oven method 320 for 25 mins. Works great! What do you guys use to clean up the old factory glue off the tires? I hate the garbage left behind.

The single stage foams are going to warp with heat, boiling or oven.
I learned this the hard way, trying to dry out some single stage closed cell foams several years ago.

I have had luck with BSI Un-cure. Just took some time and patience.

Thanks for the info! Boiling and oven methods are out per the missus anyway, but good to know.

Some foams are fine and some foams fall apart. I will experiment...

Default CI foams and acetone?

Suspend the wheels/tires on a couple of metal hangers in a 5 gal metal pail, pour a quart of acetone in, under the tires, NOT TOUCHING !!
Put lid on pail, let sit overnight, tires should peel off, no damage to anything. It's the vapors that work

Hang up and Drive

Buy a toaster oven at thrift store for baking tires, paint etc. Boiling never worked for me, the un-cure in a bottle never did much either. Baking works every time for me. Clean up the left over gooey on the tire beads with.....ACETONE on a rag.

Tried hanging over acetone in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid and didn't work, but it was winter (done in garage for two days) so less fumes from the acetone and I probably shoulda used more acetone. Soaking them in acetone works, but will usually ruin foams and melts cheapo wheels.

Be careful when boiling. Most of us have vented wheels or tires...boiling water shooting out is no fun and foams hold a lot.

I've had "ok" results with freezing the tire and wheel. The glue cracks pretty easy, and usually comes off with some patience. It's less dangerous than boiling and keeps you out of trouble with the lady of the house by not stinking up the oven.

Default CI foams and acetone?

I have tried most methods and the easiest and fastest is a heat gun. Wear gloves and keep the heat moving you can separate a wheel in about 4 minutes. You will still need to clean off the glue residue but it will get it off the rim pronto

For the record, everything came through FINE. No foam meltdown! Washed with soap and water and let them dry and all was ok. Tires and wheels are in perfect shape too.

I have destroyed some single stage foams in the past, and melted some wheels. If you stumble across this thread and plan to use acetone, do your research first!!!
