| Should I go wide or narrow?
I got bit by the crawler bug and decided to toss one together to get serious with. The plan is for a Stick with Clods and a host of other goodies but I am undecided on the width of the wheels. I know I am going to run the Proline 40 series wheels with Moab tires. What are the pros and cons to the wide Commando wheels vs. the narrow Cheyenne wheels?

There really isn't much difference in the width of the 2 wheels, I'd suggest narrowing them both down to about 2 to 2 1/4" wide.

MM, I am running the Proline Beadlocks on my rig. After running it a little I took the knife to them and narrowed them...what a big difference. It makes the Moab XL's perform ten times better. Teamsvsc has meetings weekly for members to work on their rigs. You need to hook up with them and they can help with your first rig. They are great guys...and girls. John |

WHy do people use narrow wheels? I would think people would like wide wheels since they provide more traction (I think...I seem to remember learning that friction is independent of surface area).

Depending on the terrain, it gives you more psi. When on the rocks, some of the time only a section of your tire is actually in contact, so the more psi you can put on the contact patch, the more traction you get. I personally like a wider tire than others, I don't have any specific reason why, just because. Another reason is, narrowed rims make the tire a little taller.

Yeah I just got a set of prolines with moabs and am going to try them for a while then probably narrow them and switch to xl's. Just like my 1:1 I switched from a 17x10 to a 17x8 and they worked a whole lot better for my 36x13.5's.

I'll save you some trouble and tell you to use the XTM thorns narrowed for the moabs. Much better preformance IMO. And a lot cheaper.

You don't you have to make them narrow, but here they are. Only $13.99 a pair http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/145521.asp |
