Default Drill Press Link Drilling Made Easier

For any one like me that only has a drill press and has tried to drill the ends of your custom links knows how frustrateing it is to get them strait and on center. I have found a simple solution thats work well.

Get a 2" long section of 1/2" OD mild steel. set it up in the drill press as straight as you can get it in the vise. Drill a 1/4" hole 1" deep, then change the bit to the appropriate size for the thread you will be tapping, then drill the remaining inch.

Now you can slide this part over the end of some 1/4" Aluminum rod and use the tap drill you are useing to square it up. Now your threaded holes in the ends of the links will always be straight and centered.

Hope this will help.

Erick, this thread is worthless without pics

but good idea. i always seemed to just put a black dot wheer i thought was the center, hold the link in the vice and drill it.. i like the adapter deal.. but does it really have to be 2" long? why not only make it 1" long. that way only a 1/2" sits on the link, then the drill bit for the tap size would only have to go down an inch also..guess it reallt don't matter if ya have a long enough drill bit

No, it realy doesent have to be 2" long, at 2" mine also makes a good drill stop for the bits I`m useing. Not much to take pics of but chunk of steel with a different size hole in each end.

yeah i know, just bustin your chops...

yeah after i posted that, i thought about it.. you could set your drill bit for 1 1/2" if you want and then by using the section like you described, the bit would only go down 1/2"...no need to keep track of how deep ya go

good cheap idea man... props to ya

These bits are awsome for accurate drilling.

I've been meaning to make new links for the TLT. 4/40 rod and aluminum sleeving is just not strong enough. Think it's time to step up to something beefier. Think I might crimp on your style if that's Ok.
