I've seen a few guys using a green mat with a grid on them, what are these? Are they rubber or heavy plastic? Where do you get them?

They are called self healing mats. You can get them at most of the big hobby sites, Horizon, A-main, etc. Don't be surprised by the price, there not cheap. |

You can also go to any walmart in the craft area and buy one of those or go to any hobby lobby and again in the sewing area or the art area they sell them
