| Aluminum Brazing
Has anyone tried brazing aluminum rod? I have scored some 3/16 and 1/4 solid rod and would love to braze up a sweet light weight tuber with this stuff just never tried brazing and would love to with aluminum.

I use ABR for any alum stuff, works well and doesn't need a ton of heat to work.

i was able to use the bernzomatic aluminum rods on two thick pieces of 6061, but it takes a lot of heat for the rod to work right. The result was an ugly joint, but it seems to be holding. I don't think it would work well with tube, maybe solid rod.

Harbor freight has some aluminum braze rod that a buddy of mine is using. Seems to work pretty well, although it ain't the best looking joint.

I have used this, and i swore at it using every 4 letter word i could think of. Called the local welding shop they set me in the right direction. The aliminum rod does not flow like steel or brass brazing rod. You need to heat the material and the rod to melting point and push the rod into the matterial all the way around the joint. It cost alot of money and a whole lot of patience just to find out that i should stick with steel. | |

How about a mig, I've seen the alluminum wire spools and it says it for a mig? Just wondering I have found a few cheap mig welders around don't really know the cost and want one that runs on 110V not 220V cause i cant get the wireing done at my bench.

I use this. Works very well once correct heat is reached. Unbreakable weld too. The tube will tear before the joint, If done properly QUICK FIX ALUMINUM WELDING KIT
Qty. It's by Matco tools. Part #QF1710 Price $29.85 |

| aluminum brazing
I use Hobart aluminum brazing rods and a propane torch. Get good smooth welds and most time the metal bends or breaks before the weld. I sand the spots I'm going to weld to remove the oxidization and then heat the metal not the rod. The hobarts melt at 750 deg. Get your metal hot then use the stick almost like a pencile and draw a line between the joints. I get mine from the local Tractor Supply Company. http://www.tractorsupply.com/welding...1-8-in-3851303 |
