Default First attempt at brazing, feedback please...

So I finally got off my rear end and decided to give it a shot. I stopped by the local welding supply house today and picked up the flux and 45% Silver Solder. Went by Home Depot and grabbed a torch and some 3/16" solid rod. Got home and gave it a try, I don't really know what I'm looking for as I haven't seen this done before (in person) or even seen a chassis which had been done. I tried to take a couple of good pics, constructive criticism and/or suggestions appreciated.

That doesn't look bad at all. Take a wire brush and scrub all of that flux off and it will look better. (Hopefully....)

Looks like a good first try to me.

Did you fish-mouth the end of the rod? The tighter the fit is, the easier it will be to get a good solid clean joint.

When the conditions are all correct (clean metal, flux, proper fitment, and proper temperature) the Silv will flow like water into the joint. Looks like you're on your way.

Welcome to a whole new world of custom fabrication. It's a good skill to have, that and some imagination will go a long way.

I got bored the other day cause the weather was crappy. I ended up entertaining myself for a couple hours making this travel index ramp out of scrap stock:

I did fish mouth it (used a rat tail file) before I brazed it and cleaned it before applying the flux. How do you guys determine when the temp is correct?

when the flux turns liquid clear is how i do it.

joint looks good for your first, not burnt or globbed on.

When the solder melts. Don't hold the solder in the flame... Just use the flame to heat the tubes/flux. Then when you think its getting hot enough touch the solder to the joint, if it melts it's hot enough, if not keep heating for a bit longer then touch the solder to the joint again... when it melts it's hot enough.

I can't tell just from looking at it when it's hot enough, but I'm sure more experienced people can.

Safety-Silv white flux does this, it sort of turns from white to clear as it melts and starts to flow around, this is the point when the temperature is getting close.

Yep, apply heat to the joint, not the solder. With steel, when the joint is just getting to a dull cherry red color thats about right. When you touch the rod to it, it will melt and flow pretty much instantly if it's hot enough. If it does'nt melt pull it away and wait a couple more seconds. Don't let the steel get to a bright orange color, this is too hot and you're prone to burning holes in your work.

And it will rust/corrode if you don't. Also paint won't stick as well if you don't get it off.

Looks pretty damn good for a first attempt. Your heat looks good and the solder flowed well. Keep up the good work.

Thanks again guys. I've got two weeks off coming up and I think I'll try to make an exo-cage for my scaler.
