It won't really hurt if it's off-center a bit. But, you could always put the rod in a vise, on a mill, and use a dial indicator to locate center...major PITA, and definitely not worth the effort. Or, you can drill the rod while it's chucked in a lathe. Use a center drill first, then the drill bit. I usually just use a center punch to mark close to center (eyeball), and then drill in the drill press.

If you just have a drill press you can try clamping a piece of steel plate or a piece of wood to the table. Drill a 1/4" hole thru it. Then you can stick the link up thru the hole to start a center point with a drill.

yes i was thinking about that, but out of aluminum. drilling a 1/4" hole then a smaller hole in the middle. but as usual i am lazy and hoped that there was a gig out that i could just buy.

but thanx for all the info. ka'aina

This same thing has been bugging me. I'm finally to the part where I need to drill and tap the rods. I think i'm going going to give my drill press adapter for a corded drill a shot.

Rok's idea of drilling a 1/4" hole and then inserting the rod is a real good one.

These can help alot too:

what I use to find the center of the rod is a 1/4 inch drill bit.I line the bit up to the rod so that they are parallel to each other then use the bit as a punch.if you want staright holes the you use 2 drills (or a keyed chuck) each going opposite ways. Beware I have broken lots of bits.
