Default Dyeing Delrin

Well I posted some basic instructions on this subject awhile ago but thought I would do a little more detailed post with pictures. This technique works extremely well for me and I hope this helps those who want to dye delrin.

You will need a few thing to start, first a package of Rit dye in the color of your choosing.

Here is my setup. For a heat source I use an MSR backpacking stove. A small stainless bowl with enough water to cover the strainer by an inch or so.

To hold the parts away from the bottom of the pot, I used a small strainer from Walmart with a makshift hanger made from bicycle spokes. This suspends my parts approx 3/4" from the bottom of the pot.

Next you need to have a pail of cold water to set the color later on.

Next, bring the water to a boil and pour dye in while stirring.

place parts in the small strainer and place into boiling water/dye mix

Let it sit and give the strainer a small shake every once in awhile checking every 5 minutes or so

When your happy with the progress/color remove strainer from boiling pot and dunk in the pail to set color. I didnt get a pic of the dunk because I did it fast and am not that coordinated!!

After the cold water dunk, dry your parts off and your done!!

I hope I covered everything, just be sure you use this in a well vented area and I also keep a fire extinguiser handy because of the stove I use.

Enjoy!!!

I forgot to mention, this session took approx 20 minutes to complete.

Also the larger parts ended up with a cool brownish orange streaking through it that I likely could have gotten rid of by leaving in longer but I liked it so I stopped.

I did large parts in the past and left them for 1/2 hour or more to get them jet black.

any idea on how deep the dye penetrates? I wanted to dye some blanks, than machine some rims out of them to give me a multi color wheel. thinking black and white or red and white.
