Which is the best to use, coated or non-coated brake line? Pros and cons of each ? Thanks Joe |

As far as I know galvanised coating when heated makes very poisonous fumes, Sadly all thats all I can get so I have to remove the coating before I braze.

Non coated but I'd still sand it off before you braze it.

I've used both the galvinized and the coated (the coated type I bought is kinda OD green). I found it alot easier to use the coated because its easier to clean before you braze, plus you dont have to worry about the fumes-(can be overcome by a fan) Both came out good, but alot of prep was put into both beforehand. I'd go for the coated myself-easier prep. than galvinized. Just my 2 cents. Good Flux & Good luck

You could use 1/8" or 3/16" solid rod instead... No worries about galvaniized coatings there..

how is 3/16 rod for brazing compared to brake line? seems it would be a little harder to do and I am a "wookie" at brazing |

I think the new OD green coating is PVF (plastic). It needs to be stripped completely before brazing or welding. The burning plastic smells pretty bad and could be toxic. Zinc galvanize can make you feel sick for a few days, but causes no permanent damage. Just keep your head out of the path of the fumes and give the fumes a place to go. Either coating you get, zinc or PVF, will hurt the bond between the braze and steel to some extent. You want the joint as clean as possible. Zinc is a little more forgiving here, as it is still a metal (certain fillers are made for welding zinc-coated steel). | |

3/16th steel brakeline looks more scale. sanding it does not take more than couple seconds.
