Default Automatic center punches , Starrett 18a or General tool 78?

So those with experience with automatic center punches that have used both which is better ? I have the General tools 78 and 79, and was looking at the Starrett 18a, but one thing with the 18a, is where the hell do you get replacement tips from other then Starrett?

My Starrett 18-A came with an extra tip. The original one is still pretty sharp after eight years of everyday use though.

Can't go wrong with Starrett.

It's just that I saw some reviews and people complained that it did not mark on certain materials, like stainless?

I bought a Harbor Freight auto center punch on a whim, and it actually works pretty well on common steel and aluminum. Been using it quite a bit lately. It'll probably break the next time it gets used now.....

I just tried my Starrett 18-A on all the different types of stainless we have laying around the shop here. It marks 440-C, 17-4, and 303 stainless just fine. No problems.

You can't really go wrong with the Starrett, but General makes good tools too.
