Try using some thin spring steel. Metal banding that's used to secure pallets will work too.

I asked the same question not to long ago. Someone replied to use the recoil spring metal from a Lawnmower pull start or a weed eater.

I got bored one day and made some out of an old recoil spring. I didn't put them on anything, but they looked like they would be good

I have no clue if it would be too stiff or even work, but was in the garage and got the idea. What about the dipstick from your engine or tranny? I've seen different thicknesses, depending on what kind of curves the dipstick has to move around.

I think a dipstick would work for a really small toy.Remember the more leafs and the smaller they are the better they flex. What about a 1/6 scale or bigger truck? Need a bigger material for a bigger spring.
