You'd probably be better off drilling for an interference fit and epoxying in the threaded rod in. That being said, I don't think CF is the best material to make links out of, especially lowers. Light, stiff, but brittle. Narly1 |

They make fibergglass arrow shafts and threaded inserts for the tips I dont have any idea the thread size but I am thing maybe those and the Axial plastic slider on the bottom for protection. A couply thick coats of epoky might be enough for a mini crawler or somethin light. pan cars use carbon fiber for chassis so I know "tooling" carbon fiber can be done. If no help here try some pan car guys.

Something I did years ago to make a long support rod to take place of the upper deck on a RS4 front drag project was to use carbon rod. The way I did was to epoxy a plastic tube that was similar to a super long antenna tube then screwed in threaded rod peices in the ends. I don't actuallu know what the plastic tubing was meant for I kind of just figured things out with the owner at my LHS. I've actually been thinking of doing this again to make some light wieght chassis spacers and possibly upper links and steering links, not sure I would use it for lower links.

| Full Force RC Carbon Fiber Bent Links
CF bent links Full Force RC sells Carbon Fiber tubes and sheets. I used Axials bent Alum links to establish 30 degree bend and 2 pieces of CF tube I used 3200 psi epoxy The Full Force RC kit comes with 8-32 left & right hand alum inserts. I use T-Maxx alum bellcrank posts to be able to have a female insert, and then I can use steel grubb screws to attach rod ends. I use a dremel to make glue slots in the bellcrank post. The bellcrank post is too long, should be shortened. The epoxy has not failed, hot or cold. |

I should try them for lowers. I need to get more parts. It seemed to make sense to get the COG lower by using them on top first.

OK, I moved the Carbon Fiber 30 degree bend links to the bottom, added 6" Sedonas, and took 3rd place at a local comp. All the Carbon Fiber & Epoxy held up great. Turns out that the links slide over rocks smoother than anything else I have used. Also have Carbon Fiber 1 piece Steering Tierod, held up fine. Ordered more Full Force RC Carbon Fiber Tubes & Threaded Inserts to make straight upper links to use with extended bulkheads.

I read an article awhile back in one of the mags. They used threaded rod, through carbon fiber tubes. I actually just found the article, so I only have the page number, and the info... RC411.com is extreme R/C isn't it? Listed in the "monster pit" section. 6-32 threaded rod traxxas rod end kit (#2742) 1/4x.049 tube Or, beefier links 8-32 threaded rod Traxxas #5347 kit tubing 5/16x.049 Sorry I don't have the month, but I'm sure if you search the "Monster pit" section at www.rc411.com you'll find it.... Or check page 50 sometime during the last year or so... Joe_Breezy |

I have been thinking about making some uppers for my BJv4 but they have to be bent twice in an S shape. I am thinking about trying to find some silicone tubing the correct diameter to be the I.D. of the finished carbon tube. Then I will slide a metal rod in and bend it to shape so I have a nice core to work off of. Then use some of these carbon sleeves http://www.solarcomposites.com/compo...20sleeves.html over the core, when dry pull the core out (that will be the hard part) and epoxy in set screws for the rod ends to screw onto. I think it would work but it will take some experimentation to figure it out. Luckily their sleeves are only 70 cents a foot so its not all that expensive but dont forget about the epoxy resin and other supplies.
