Default Seperate mill and lathe or combo unit?

It's getting closer to purchase time hpoefully. Seems something always comes up just when I get ready to write the check.

Is it worth getting the combo unit from Smithy or should I just get seperate units?

What are the pros and cons of having an all in one unit.

Mad Hatter... If you have the room, I would highly suggest a separate lathe and mill. You will find you waste a lot of time having to tear down something you have setup on the lathe wanting to use the mill, or vice versa.

I know from experience!

You would be better off buying a cheap lathe and a nice mill. The lathe from harbor freight is actually pretty nice for the money. You will do a whole lot more on the mill than the lathe. Besides, the tooling is where you will spend most of the cash anyway.

For a mill you should really look into Sherlines products. There are other companies that sell a complete CNC Sherline Mill for around $2500, including the computer and software. You can also get the mill and upgrade to CNC at a later date.
