dont know if it was mentioned. but once you get the larger welder you could turn it all the way down and run .024' wire and be able to weld thin material with a sort of pulse material.

kinda digging up an old thread but curious as what you went with... we had a clarke mig welder, its a chinese version of a miller and it was awesome, we always run .035" wire in it and its built a ton of projects from 30' boat trailers, gates for fences, racing mowers, and general building small shit.. a week before christmas it finally died so dad bought a lincoln 180 and its been a good welder so far.. i havent played with it much but i plan to.. i can built bumpers and cages for rc's just fine with one. the shop is wired for 220v so thats what we've always ran.

I found that for the small stuff switching to .023 wire helps keep the grinding to a minimum. The hard part is getting the heat right to get the bead to lay flatter. I have since switched to a TIG to eliminate 90% of the post welding grinding. Now I only have to grind in certain areas where body panels or other stuff will lay over the tubing. |

we do a lot of bigger stuff with the welder too so its not worth the effort to switch wire but the grinding can be a pain sometimes though. |

well i ended up not getting anything as of yet..... but i am still "planning" on getting the 180 lincoln. i am just more fond of the lincoln then the miller models. i do some 1:1 work as well that is why i am wanting it. if it was just the rc stuff then i would go with the 140 model. i just can't seem to get past the $500 price tag.... unfortunatly my wife knows that i have a few friends with welders soooooo i get the "just use a friends" reason when i try to get one! LOL!! |

This past summer I got a 220v wire feed (Mig capable) for $200 from Harbor Freight and it is GREAT. I don't care what people say about HF. It is their own brand, Chicago Electric I believe. It was $300 on sale for $200. Definitely go for a 220v if you can. There's my $0.02.

This is where i make my living...........Welding If you want a mig welder you want a red one. Way more adjustability and consistency if you want precision. If you want a tig welder as far as im concerned....there is only a blue one. (i do welding for NASA) I would never weld with anything else and i have literally tried them all... But like everyone else was saying yes go big! you can always lower your values! Just for fun here is some passes on some moly with 309 stainless yesterday. ( not bragging at all i just love what i do ) |
