| What can I do with a mill?
I am thinking about buying the smallest mill from harborfreight. The question I have is, if a get the mill and a rotary table, will I be able to do work that is similar to what a lathe does?, or should a get a lathe and a milling attachment? Thanks in advance for your input.

You can't do everything a lathe can do, but it can work in a pinch. I'd suggest going with seperate units, for the reasons stated here. Seperate mill and lathe or combo unit? |

I too would suggest seperate units, although a combo unit would be better than nothing. If you wanted to start out, cant beat little sherlines for the tighness outta the box. It isnt too much to get a mill with rotary table and add the lathe bed. You then have two machines in a small space for a small cost. Of course I just got a used Logan lathe that weighs 1300 pounds for less than you will spend on the new sherline equipment. I still am gonna get a rotary table for my sherline mill though |

what can a lathe do, that a mill w/ a rotary table cant? I think you probably cant bore, but mostly face-lathe ( I think thats the right word) with it, right? Ive been thinking about a HF, or a sherline lathe and/or mill.

I have a Sherline 4000A lathe with the vertical milling column and rotary table. It's great for making your own RC parts. Quote:
Here's some things I've made with the mill and rotary table. You won't be making parts like these on a lathe. Beadlock rings Custom transmission housing for a Monster Pirate 2-speed that'll be fed 1,700+ watts. I made a new brake cam blank with the lathe... Then I drilled the holes with the mill... Then milled flats into the cam to finish it up. I spent $700 for the lathe/mill combo with the rotary table. I see it as money well spent. If I can imagine it, I can make it. | |

those are nice looking parts. so do you have two separate machines, or only one machine with bolt-on access.'s? ive thought about something like this, or getting a taig lathe for about $230, and a HF mill for $260. I wont be making very intricate parts w/ the HF mill.

Just a Sherline 4000A lathe with a Sherline vertical milling column (Attachment for the lathe) and a Sherline rotary table.
