Default Soldering, what am I doing wrong?!

Ok, i'm making a mini tube frame from solder and clotheshanger, yes very mini I've scratched the surface with sandpaper to roughen it up, but it still wont stick, i'm not using flux, I didn't think i needed to with a little solder gun. Thanks for all input
BTW the solder gun i'm using is 25 Watt

I don't think that a 25 watter will do it. Try a small torch or get a 250 watt gun. For any heavy soldering you need a hotter tip. Another thing is if your hanger is steel you might not have any luck with soldering. Definately need brass.

a small crack lighter type torch would be perfect for that.

Don't forget to wipe the ends off with some rubbing alcohol after you sand them, just to be sure they are super clean. And try not to touch the areas to be soldered with your fingers after you have cleaned them.

30 watt weller got the brass together really well and I cant break it with my hands, using half my muscles! and im not weak, and I carry around a 40 lb backpack all day at school! I didnt sand, prep or do anything just cut bend heat up teh solder let it sit on the joint took it off and did both sides filled a little, primered it a little waiting to dry then Ill get pics! Its just a little bend not a r/c part

I broke it, by using some pliers, and pulling straight up with some good force! not strong enough for a tlt, strong enough for a zzmt/ssmt/ etc NOT a VMG!

PULLLLL, broke

The filler pulled from the wire. You could have cleaned or roughened that area a bit better. A properly soldered joint will fail outside the joint or the filler will tear apart.

yeah, I was just testing with a 30 watt and it seems strong! It sticks well but I didnt do any prepping! Not even cleaning it up! So therefore I think 30 watt weller is plenty good enough for a zzmt job! I had to peel it back, thats how I got it off the solder, and your right, but I couldnt pull it straight up!

Under vibration a poor joint will fail in very short time. You are right in that the 30W iron could do the job though.

Exactly! It has to be done right with a 30 watt, but its possible with some pratice! A higher wattage soldering iron would be mucho easyier to make stronger joints, but if you dont got the 30+ bucks to get a decent one! I perfer wellers also! What do you guys perfer for wires!

no matter what kind of soldering you are doing you need to use flux it cleans the pourus materials so the solder itself will stick and helps it stick but definately sand, flux, heat up then touch solder on it there are different strengths of solder get hardest that you can find no led
