Default Need some Lathe work..

The shop near by doesn't have time for my small job... or so he says.

I have a small job needing to be done.. need a 1.5" alum rod turned down to 1.490.
Drilled 5/16".
3 sections 3/8" thick parted off.
The last part of the rod now drilled 3/8"

Anyone here willing to do it for me and not charge an arm and a leg for it ?

Thank you.

You will probably have to start with larger material, .010" isn't much to take off an extruded shape.

1.5" round stock isn't exactly cheap, just so you know. And as rob b pointed out, you will have to start with a diameter larger than 1.5". Most material suppliers will only sell by the foot.

So...... is this a rod you already have?

And by 1.5", is that its current length and you were looking to get {4} 3/8" thick washers out of that? (with all kerfs being taken from the last piece) If that's the case, do you really need them 3/8ths? 'Cause my guess is that last piece'd be mighty thin.

Well my bar is 3" and I Need two 3/8" the disk. Whats left over drill out 3/8" bit.
And I guess sanding it down would be better to get the 1.490" ?

Sanding down stock wont keep the surface finish consistent. 2" Aluminum stock and turn it down to the final diameter of 1.490" would give better results.

.010" is just enough to scratch the surface and show how out of round the stock is.

Ok I feel like a real dumbbell. . Found my notes.
Rod is 1.50" extruded 6061
The tube it needs to fit into is 1.490".
I removed the old ones by banging them out with a broom handle so they are a snug fit but not needing a 15 ton press kinda fit.. lol

Sorry for the mix up on the numbers as I posted off the top of my head..

I'm assuming that the 1.490" is the inner diameter of the tube?

Just FYI, stick the male piece in the freezer for a few hours it'll shrink up enough to help it to into the female piece. The job doesn't seem like a big challenge at all- just a couple hours on the lathe.

Just to get this straight, you're wanting the tube and rod to be cut at every 3/8th"?

Just the rod.. it's 3" long.. cut off two 3/8" thick spacers with 5/16" hole.
The left over drill out with a 3/8" bit. But it has to be drilled on the lathe so to be centered.

Have you found anybody to do this for you? If not I can do it easily. Really if you cover shipping both ways that's good enough for me. It won't take me more then 1/2 hour. Let me know
