| Weight question - powder coating a tube frame
Just wondering if anyone has ever weighed how much powder coating adds to a tube frame. I'm thinking of an alternative to power coating, and want to compare weight numbers to see if what I want to do will make the frame heavier or lighter than powder coating. I don't have quick access to powder coating tools, so I can't test myself :( Any insight would be greatly appreciated. |

weight difference would be negligible at best. if you want a heavier tuber, build it with solid rod; or put sand in the brakeline. |

i can let ya know, hopefully by the end of the week. i hope to get a hustler 2.2 chassis and a powder coater, but as always either in the mail or back ordered. i would agree that the weight would probably be negligent. i will still be posting it thought |

Thanks. I figure it's not significant, but I'm still curious. I'm looking at something more durable than powder coating, but I fear it will add unnecessary weight to the frame.

Rhino liner or Line-x are both heavier than powder coating. And it's been done before. If that's what you were thinking?

Powder coating may add a couple grams at best, maybe an ounce most..? I can't tell the weight difference from a coated tuber to an uncoated tuber when holding one in each hand. I feel the coating is insignificant in the weight department. I'd like to know what you're thinking of doing. |

Powder coating: Before: 1 lb 4.2 oz or .57 kg After: 1 lb 4.8 oz or .58 kg That is with 2 coats of powder coat |

That's what I figured...thanks guys for the info! I was thinking, and still may, coat my frame in plast-dip. I want something durable, and that stuff really holds up to everything I've used it for. I'm worried about how much weight it will add, and potentially making my comp-based rig more top heavy than it could/should be. Since it's really easy to remove , I'm going to dip it anyway and see how much it adds. I'll post back with some numbers in case anyone cares... Maybe I'll call it "Rubber Hustler" |

i wouldnt worry about the wieght with plastic dip. If im correct that stuff is some what sticky and wouldnt slide off the rocks very well. I think a frame looks better beaten up shows the battle scares |
