That's ok, neither does Fish!

1st thing...clean the rust off it!

John, you were asking how it goes from a mill to lathe, etc...here ya go.

Here's my 4000 lathe set up with the vertical milling column. You also nabbed a vertical column with your lathe. Notice the two red arrows. These point to a couple of grub screws that you loosen to convert from mill to lathe and back.

Loosen the grub screw on the lathe (top red arrow) until you can remove the motor assembly from the vertical column. Set the motor assembly aside.

Loosen the grub screw at the base of the vertical column, lift the column off and set it aside...

Set the motor assembly onto the spot from where you just removed the column, tighten the grub screw, install the chuck and you have a lathe.

www.sherline.com

Great little machines.

Look for a lathe and then add the milling attachment.

I'm guessing around $650 new.

Do you still want that rotary table/chuck combo that's here in town?

Didn't get to speak with the guy last week, was too busy.

Can get with him this week if needed.

i believe the crosslide is not brass, but dirty and slightly rusted. brass would be too soft, it would wallow out quickly.

Yeah! That was the E-Bay pic of how it was when I got it! Some piant was rubbed off also. Its a little cleaner and less rusty! Still looks old, but it works fine! No brass on this puppy!

As for tips on where to buy, I bought most of my stuff from Sherline over the internet.

www.sherline.com

Ebay parts on these seem to go about 80-90% of full retail.

Sherline website has a 20% special every month. Takes a while, but that's how I bought my compound, rotary table and lathe change thread gears.

there is also www.thesherlineshop.com . they seem to have good pricing off retail pretty consistantly.

I ordered my parts from www.thesherlineshop.com They have good prices, way below retail and around ebay prices.

Before 1982, they used brass crosslide and beds. http://www.sherline.com/usedmach.htm I don't know why it looks brass in the picture.
