| Maxle Shafts!
MIP never designed their shafts for crawlin... I have broken probably close to 30 of them. I have some BEEFY replacements in line for fabrication, but for now, this has solved my problems. What it is is an MIP, (just the "bell" end) Welded to a length of 1/4 steel rod. Welding to the larger diameter of the bell allows a good weld and eliminates that dinky shaft they put on them. The Cross pin is then drilled and i run roll pins because the hardened steel pins snap while the mild steel hangs in there a bit longer. I have flipped the truck over binding one wheel and they are holding strong! I have only managed to tear a moab from a rim and sheer hardened steel cross pins. The roll pins have not failed yet but there has only been two charges through them. I drew a line down the shafts to monitor twisting and so far there has been none! WC ...You guys are going to love the next chapter of my steering axle. Can you say "lifetime warrantee?" Last edited by WheelChair; 07-07-2008 at 07:03 PM. |

Anyway, didn't post up just to poke fun. Have you tried any different ways of strengthening the MIP shafts? I need to shorten mine for a 2.2 Maxx, and i'm planning to cut a section out of them, then braze a sleeve on there to join the two sections together. Wonder if you could cut the shaft in half, then sleeve it? Certainly a lot simpler than fabbing most of a new shaft. Cheers, Paul

For your 2.2, use the center MIP's from an e-maxx. You need stub shafts to replace the drive joint but thats easy if you have a bunch of broken MIP's! MIP's for a Maxx are PLENTY strong for a 2.2. EvilEddy420 built his red devil this way and has NEVER broken a shaft.... now keeping good rims on those axles is another story though... This is the future of the WC 2.2. As for the Super Shafts... I have everything ordered and on its way to me now. I should be getting a package from OH today! Its going to be HEAVY but thats the way she likes it! The Wheel Bearings I am using are larger then a rollerblade bearing! The axle tubes and knuckles are all being replaced with Rock Solid components. WC

Have you tried using revo shafts? I have heard alot of people say they hold up better than the cvd's. I know they did for me. |

That was as a driveshaft with 2.83 times less force on it then an axleshaft. I am eliminating all plastic. Another problem is I use 3/4" tube for axle tubes. no room for revo. WC

How much run time did these see? Looks like some pretty good scratches on them. They are big though. If you have 3/4" tubes they wouldn't work. My rig was 18 lbs. and they survived pretty well. I was not running with the speed your truck has though. |
