Default Slipper adjustment

I finally tore down my TRX-4 gearbox for a full bearing replacement as well as cleaning and relube. I'm not real happy with the instructions regarding setting up the slipper clutch. I find it hard to believe that there is no fatigue on the washers that are used instead of a proper spring so the idea of simply backing the nut off 22.5 degrees doesn't really float with me.

The way the spur is set up you need to take the transmission off to adjust the slipper so setting the same way you would a go fast rig isn't practical.

I know that many people eliminate the slipper and I'm using a Revolver motor so I can clearly hear when the rig is getting into a bound condition but my sons don't understand that.

Does anyone know a good way to adjust the slipper?

I really think that Traxxas could have done better with this.
