Also, get a 550 motor. The TRX4 is not light.

In case you weren't aware, the stock Traxxas TRX-4 motor is a 21t 3-slot 550-can-size brushed motor. 5-slot equivalents will be somewhat smoother but a bit less punchy off the initial throttle tip-in. Here's Holmes Hobbies chart for motor recommendations: https://holmeshobbies.com/motor-recommendations And their specific recommendations for the TRX-4: Reverse Rotation Motor Required General Trail use: 27t – 21t TrailMaster Sport 550 (12t is not suitable for crawling) 27t – 21t TorqueMaster 550 15t – 12t CrawlMaster 550 (single speed transmission) 10t – 8t CrawlMaster 550 (single speed transmission with gearing reduction) 15t – 10t CrawlMaster 550 (two speed transmission) Puller Pro V2 Rock Crawler Motor - Standard Revolver V2 (Subnose is not recommended) |

I've got three Trx4's, all with different electronics setups. The sport has a Mamba micro and a slate 2850kv geared 11/45. It's a good all around setup. Plenty of torque. Having the aux. wire to adjust drag brake on the fly has been handy to adjust for different conditions. Another has a Holmes 21T 550 3 slot and a BRXL geared 11/45. Creeps along a little bit better than the brushless motors. Just a bit more power and drag brake than the stock Traxxas titan motor, and at $22 I don't feel bad destroying a couple motors a year from playing in the mud. I keep another 21T on the shelf. Then there's the one with a Puller Pro 2200kv and a Mamba X geared 12/45. Rips wicked wheelies, will toast the slipper if you don't snug it down, and has very good low speed control considering the amount of raw torque. The other two trucks did not like hauling around the Tracks in deep snow. The puller doesn't care. Run it in high gear at WOT all pack if you want and the puller barely melts the snow off itself. The other 2 trucks get cooking hot with low gear use and more conservative driving. The tracks just add a ton of weight and drag. For budget you can't go wrong with the 21T 550 sportsmaster, and for ridiculous overkill check out the Puller Pros. |
