Default Twade’s VS410 Mash-up

First thread in a while, I figured with how slow the forum has been, I might as well contribute something.

This is a pretty basic build… well, assembly.

txbart listed an assembled but all brand new VS410 Pro based project for sale at an incredible price, so I knew I had to jump on it. And even though I didn’t have a plan in mind at the time, it didn’t take long once the rig showed up.

This was built to a really good standard, and while it may seem like a step backwards, I already have a really nice pro with clear d44 housings.

Ever since the f10 portals were released, I’ve had the idea of putting together my ideal version of a VS410 Ultra. I had an ultra for a short period, but found the f9 portals to lack in steering angle, and be a little too heavy for my liking.

So step one was tear down and sell the parts I wasn’t going to use. After all was said and done I was basically left with

Origin body
Vs410 chassis
Reefs 422hd v2 servo
VP clamping servo horn
Holmes Crawlmaster sport 16t (donated from a past project)

I had already sold the pro transmission before deciding to make this a project. But I found a good deal on a used kit/ultra spec vfd and got that coming asap

Then once my PayPal account recovered, I scored a deal on a Phoenix portal kit, and some falken mt’s from JSterrett

Sorted through what I did and didn’t want from the kit, and ended up with

Axles
Links
Driveshafts
80mm s8e shocks (not pictured)

And that’s where I’m currently at. Next steps for me are assembling the axles, links and shocks, replacing bearings in the vfd, and then deciding on a wheel and tire package.

Tire wise, I’m either using some Pitbull rock beasts, or falken mt’s.

Wheels will be vanquish of some sort, possibly grey tanks(from another rig), or some sort of 310, 101, or machete.

I also need to grab an Esc, I’ll most likely go with a Hobbywing 1080 to keep this thing low budget/reliable. No

Oh idk man, I’m only in it about $400 so far, and that’s before selling the extra parts I won’t be using from the Phoenix kit. If everything sells I’ll be in it $265 before wheels, tires, Esc and whatever small odds and ends I may need.

Looks like a fun build. I’ll be watching this mashup take shape!

Yeah, Lord knows RCC needs more traffic. It’s been feeling like a ghost town around here lately!

I agree, seems to be only a hand full of people posting regular build threads.

Thanks for checking it out

Got a little work done during nap time

Trans torn down, cleaned, new bearings and fresh grease. It was in pretty good shape, and well greased, probably could have ran it with no issues for a while, but this is part of the fun.

Got the motor/trans assembly dropped in, and servo horn centered and servo installed.

For my future reference, I’m sticking with the 56/15 spur/pinion combo. If it’s too slow, I’ll grab a 52t spur and swap out.

Default Twade’s VS410 Mash-up

More progress made!

Axles, links and driveshafts all built and installed on the chassis

For future reference, I used 70 weight in the shocks

Auditioned the wheels and tires off another rig, think I’m sold on the clear machetes, but tires are a tad small.

Tanks look good, but not sold on the grey.

Think machetes and falkens are a winner. I will need to get some new foams to properly fill out the tires

I have a hard time imagining a setup I’d like more

Foams and 52t spur gear are on the way from Eh main! Hope to run this thing by the weekend

Well I got a window of opportunity to take some rigs out after work today.

Foams showed up yesterday, so last night I stuffed those in the falkens, stole a 1080 that was slated for another project, realized I ran out of receivers on my last project, and then stole one out of another rig.

And she’s ready to go. Wiring could be better, but it will do for now.

For a last minute impulse project, this turned out really good.

I only wish I could start every project with a painted body

I should mention I went with CI lil nova 4.5” med/firm foams. Removed the outer tuning ring, and they seem to be perfect for this setup

Got this thing out for its first run, overall I’m super happy with it. Performs as well as you’d expect, the vs410 platform is pretty dialed in imo.

Future changes will definitely include a 52t spur, and I’m probably going to pull the 16t Crawlmaster and put in a 13t. 16t just didn’t feel smooth enough. I have 13’s in multiple rigs geared much higher that feel a lot better. Otherwise this thing is basically done. Eventually I’ll add some scale hubs, and maybe scale hardware for the wheels.

That's great info. I have the Falken R/T's and have been wanting to try out the M/T's next.

Nice shots of it out on the rocks! Looks right at home!

It made it about an inch further and then I turned the wheels the wrong way and over she went

I couldn’t believe it held on as long as it did though
