| 3D Printed Vaterra Ascender Body
Just decided I want something more aggressive for my Vaterra Ascender. Designed in Openscad for 3D print, still printing. Still work in progress, below photo is just 1/3 complete. Everyhing is available here for free, feel feel to print it or create based on it. - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1425294 I'd be happy to include any ideas, feel free to post photos as inspiration Last edited by viorel.spinu; 03-18-2016 at 07:56 AM. |

Testing some green paint. Next days I'm going to use some cardboard to test the looks if I make the back wider (like 50% wider). |

Looks like fun, I've thought about buying a 3d printer, but havent'. It's kinda like Legos of the 21st century, loved creating things with Legos when I was a kid and now with 3d printing you can create even more imaginative things. EDIT: They are great for keeping your mind sharp and working in a positive manner. |

Yup, 3D printing is cool I'm now using 3D printing for almost everything I build, bodies, transmissions, gears, functional accessories, whatever. Here is a fully 3D printed truck, it's filmed just at the very beginning of the project. Everything is 3D printed there, but the motor and the electronics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KyCs1MXQSI I have a good friend who is using a 3D printer to create static truck models, and I would say he gets really good results, judge for yourself (again, everything but the paint is 3D printed) - https://www.google.ro/search?q=arin+...HW2gCJwQsAQIHA Last edited by viorel.spinu; 03-20-2016 at 01:43 PM. |

Some more changes, enlarged the rear and more aggressive front part. Didn't had the time to print, will work on the design some more tomorrow. |

2125, Earth. John had to build something on wheels to fight against the alien insects who invaded Earth one year ago. He just used what he could find in the scrapyard nearby, an old Soviet truck body and some wood to keep it in one piece. Last edited by viorel.spinu; 03-22-2016 at 04:15 AM. Reason: spelling issues |

All this 3D printing stuff makes me wonder how far we are from "Star Trek" style replicators... |

That was quick, how about a design that has a "Z" cut between the two pieces so that the cab can be joined to the front part without the add-on 'sticks' and four screws down the sides? Is that a lot more work to design or? You should move the cab forward and print a bed to go behind it. Skinnyj, not too far off it seems. |

@Natedog I've used four printers, each worked for like 7 hours, so it's about 28 hours of print there I will get rid of the add-on side sticks (I'll just move them on the inside of the body). I can also completely get rid of them as your suggestion, but this will also make the body weaker (and I tend to roll over with my truck too often ). Next week I will probably explore your suggestion, the sketch I've made this morning does not appeal to me too much, seems a pretty dull Sunday truck.. @skinnyj I think we're pretty far Although 3D printing can look like magic, it's really nothing so amazing or new as it might seems. Guys with a technical approach could build similar since the first CNC machine / lathe was invented. What's cool in 3D printing is that it's a bit simpler to use than a lathe, so lot of people has now access to digital fabrication. I still think it will take lot of time to get close to a StarTrek replicator... |

Just realized I want bigger rear fenders. Going to print just the oversize fenders today, cut the old ones, and glue the new ones in place. |

Very cool! Which 3D printer are you using? And what is the modeling software called?

For this print, I've used four machines, each with a 40cm X 20cm x 20cm print area. I'm using Openscad for modelling, but I've used the truck cabin as a whole and just added the rest of the elements in Openscad. It has been designed by my friend Arin Panait, don't know what software he's using. The first version (available here - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1425294) is fully designed in Openscad by me.
