| 2-speed vs locked vs scx10
Hi, I'm new to crawlers but have 5 other rc trucks. Anyway, picked up a used twin hammers. I've been going thru it and trying to figure out a build plan. Will be used for trailing on hiking paths, etc., mostly dirt. Ain't a whole lot of rocks in South Louisiana. It has a stock 2 speed tranny with all metal gears but no shift servo. I also only have 2 channel radios. Looking for opinions, pros/cons of staying 2 speed, locking it in high, or swapping in an scx10 trans. I have not driven it yet cause I'm waiting on other parts to get it running.

If your not crawling then I would go with an scx trans with metal gears. If your not crawling then 2 speed is really pointless unless you just like the novelty of it. And an scx trans is better than a locked vaterra trans because it is lighter and has less slop then the vaterra trans. Sent from my SM-G920T using Tapatalk |

If do the scx trans you should use this adapter plate to mount it. I use it and it works and fits great. https://www.shapeways.com/product/NN...ionId=57414858 Sent from my SM-G920T using Tapatalk |

I would keep the 2 speed then you can do both, there is a manual shift lever on shapways as well. Twin Hammers Manual Gear Change Lever |

The 2 speed transmission will allow you more versatility over the long run, should you keep your Twin Hammers for a while. The Twin Hammers really can do both, high speed bashing and low speed crawling. If you ever decide to build your Twin Hammers into a crawler, you'll already have the transmission set-up to do it by just switching into low gear. You never know, you might move to a location with rocks, you might decide to go on vacation in a rocky location, or President Trump might ship a bunch of rocks out to Louisiana... |

Well if they send rocks down here they probably gonna get dumped in the gulf of Mexico. I guess I could get lucky and they would put them on dry land.

Will the 2 speed stay locked by itself if I manually do it?

| Re: 2-speed vs locked vs scx10 There are a couple of ways you can permanently lock the gearbox in high or low gear, but what I've done with mine is simply made a manual shifter to shift between gears. Just poke my finger through the cage and change the gear as required. Very occasionally it jumps out of gear, but most of the time there isn't an issue. Looks like a scale gear stick also. |

For the 2 speed transmission to remain in one of the gears (high or low) of your choosing, you'll need some mechanical means of holding it there. Many (including me) use a turnbuckle to do this. Some use a dead servo, or you can be creative (as pictured above) and fab up some other means of holding the transmission in gear. Without some mechanical means, the 2 speed transmission will not stay in either gear, but will continually slip into neutral. |

That Scorched Parts gear change lever is the best option on the market in my opinion. My whole build is set up for crawling only, so I'd never be changing back and forth between gears on a run. But having the ability to change gears in case my build goes in a different direction...that's sweet. And since I never change gears while running, having to remove the cage in order to change gears doesn't concern me. If I'd be changing gears, that's because the vehicle is being built differently, so the cage is coming off anyway. |

I think I'll try the scorched parts manual switch for now and just see what direction the build goes.

Personally I locked into high and chose to run a brushless sensored setup. With a smooth slow start up and good hi end speed, there is no need for low gear.

I want to look into brushless also. It came with an ax5 esc and a 35turn brushed motor. Just need to fix front diff and get some wheels and tires.

Anybody know what a scx10 trans correspond to? First gear, second gear, or something in between?
