| BEC question
Well I'm just starting out with crawling. Just got my venom in today. I have been reading on here that I should get a bec. I wish someone would have said that I had to get one not that I should get one. I got a cheap duratrax speed controler shipped with my venom to start with and noticed that most speed controllers do not have a bec on them. At least there are no extra wires to power my receiver. Now I have to wait to look around to find a good one and figure out how to intall one. I guess I have to put my build on hold for a while now and do more reading. Oh ya the duratrax I got was the 1059.

you need the wires that go from esc to the rx, it usually looks like a servo extension just bring what you have to the hobby shop and im sure they can find the wires you need for a couple bucks

I think I got it figured out. I will buy a bec though. Time for more shopping. Lots to choose from. Hope I don't mess this up now.

Check out rmdw's t's & t's. . . A lot of good info there and it shows exactly how to wire it up then check out my build thread and look at the last page I have a cool jumper that makes it easy to wire it up

| The castle link allows you to adjust the voltage output of your BEC. they come stock at 5.2v output but if your servo will take it you can usually crank it to 7v on 3cell lipo

I actually run it @ 6.5VDC, but I realize I "may" shorten it's life a bit. You can set it to whatever you want, but exceeding the 6.0VDC input will shorten it's life.

Your crawler will still work, you just may be lacking in the steering strength without running a more powerful bec, but it all depends if your servo is powerfull enough anyway. hope that helps

You get an idea you need an external BEC when you load the steering and the rig quits working. You usually see the RX lights go off until you unload the front wheels. This is what I found, adding a CC BEC resolved that issue. If you're just having fun, maybe you can deal with the occasional issue. If you're comping, it becomes a major deal that requires you to "touch" your rig which adds up points quickly.

| +1 . . . . i have a hitec 7954SH which is rated at 7.4v max . . . so when i go 3cell i will program my BEC at 7 or 7.4v which should get me in the neighborhood of the rated 403oz. of torque.

Thanks for all the reply's guys. I guess when I'm done building I will try it out and see how it works first and see if I need one. I was thinking that my speed controller did not have a bec because there was no power wire to attach to my receiver. I'm use to the tamiya speed controllers that have a seperate wire for power. Also I did not think there were going to be so many small screws building this thing. What a pain. Well the tires are the worst. Has no problems with the tranny like others said they had. Thanks again guys. |

I didnt see it mentioned but if you decide on a Castle Bec and purchase from Holmes Hobbies he will pre program it for you to what ever voltage you like. That way you dont have to get a castle link for one adjustment. I got mine programed for 6v and love it. Holmes shipping is way fast too!
