| Clod Factor
Hey guys whats up. Just got an original 1987 Clod Buster, in mint condition. I was sitting there last night bored out of my mind when i realized, the Clod chasis has basically no potential for crawling. I want to keep the Chasis original so i can keep it nice forever. hehe. yea, but i was looking at my x factor sitting there hopelessly on the shelf with no motor, when i thought up the grat idea to combine the 2. now i have clod axles on an x chasis. the thing that is cool is that this swap only takes about 45 mins. you dont really have to fabricate any custom parts. i will be posting pics soon. my first attempt at crawling yesterday went awesome. it flexes great, and has hella ground clearance. i only had the rear diff locked and 2 wheel steering, and it was kickin my friends txt's ass. the txt is locked front and rear. so far its working great. and its a very easy swap. try it!!! Yea, I'll be posting pics later on today. Im really busy studying for finals right now. I think i need to make the chasis a little bit narrower. i dont have the 8 coil setup on it yet, but since the clod axles are shorter than the x when its fully flexed the tires are less than a quater inch from the chasis. if you set a stock txt 1 next to it and flex them both the wheels are pretty much even, so its got a decent amount of travel. im going to do a write up on how to do it, because of the ease of the swap and the end result i wouldnt be suprised if more people do it. Somethings wrong... I don't see a servo for steering. Do you have one? If so, please tell me it is mounted on the axle somewhere and I just didn't see it in any of those pics :? Other than not seeing a servo it looks like it'll work but, always that big but... it seems the main advantage of running Clod axles in a crawler is the fact that you can have a super light weight & small chassis. You have just added a heavier/more bulky chassis. If it works for ya then run it! It's good that people are working outside the normal "boxes" to get new ideas flowing. BTW: What have you done with the X-Factor axles?? :P |

The steering servo is in the chasis where the reverse servo used to be in the one of the pics you can see the pushrod just sitting there, becuase i had a problem with it always pulling the rod out of the link. right now i have the servo on the axle. its a ghetto quick mount with zip ties. i know that the chasis is very heavy, but my custom fab skills arent the greatest. i threw this together in about 45 mins so i would have something to play with for 2-3 weeks. Im gogint to go out and build a custom chasis in about a week. it would be awesome if someone out there would like to make me a set of steering servo mounts on the axles. as far as the x axles, im going to hold on to them, after i get my custom chasis for my clod finished, i am going to do an electric setup on the x. emaxx tranny and slider shafts super rooster and mag mayhems. o btw are the mag mayhems longer than the motors that come on the clod? i read that they were, they just barely clear the links on my truck, so i was wondering if i would be able to swap them. |

Making a servo mount is easy or you can purchase a little kit form many different places... check into RC4wd.com, inetrc.com, thundertechracing.com, and more. The stock silver cans are 540 style and Mag Mayhems are 550 style. 550's are a bit longer than 540's. Some people just build their links with a bend in it from the start for clearance issues. Get rid of that old school steering as soon as you can... you'll be amazed at the better steering once you do. |
