Shaun's 1987 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe Restore

I spent most of my day disassembling and cleaning the engine bay.

This is how it turned out.

I'm pretty happy with what it already looks like, and its not even close to done.

Here is how it started.

Heres a small video a slapped together with a little exhaust clip at the end.

Well I made my summit order tonight, I can't wait! I'll be removing the computer and going with a Vacuum advance dist. and Edelbrock 600cfm carb.

I can't wait!!

Thats a whole lot of cool looking parts you got there especially the headers. I can't wait to see what it looks like when you get it all back together.

Wait till you install the headers and see that the 305 has a different bolt pattern on the #'s 7 & 8 exhaust ports then any other small block Chevy. They are spread out more on the front side of the ports. You will either have to drill new holds or get a rotten exhaust leak thats impossible to seal off. Also, get yourself some heat reap for the passenger side header or it will cook your starter and trust me, you dont wanna have to change the starter once you have the headers in the way. Ive built and run over 20 G-Bodies in every model GM ever produced. My latest is a 86 Buick Regal Grand National Clone with a 383 stroker that turns 11.38's all day through the pipes and on BFG Drag Radials.

Red is 5.0 305 bolt pattern, Green is every other SBC

Nice progress so far, but purple hornies glasspacks? ewww, is it legal in your state not have the exhaust exiting from the body of the car from the rear wheels back?

Not that I know of, I might have an exhaust shop run some pipes out the sides.

I mocked them up and they fit fine, maybe I'm missing something? I'll be sure to do the wrap.

Aw! I guess you are right, I only checked the drivers header.

I'm thinking I can just take the stock manifold and bolt it to the header and use the hole from the stock manifold as a pilot.

Thanks for the heads up on the wrap and the bolt!

You bet. I have lots of experiance with the G's. Need any help or advice, LMK.

My first experiance with them was my moms 80 Monte Carlo Turbo and then I bought a 79 Grand Prix with fresh paint and no motor/tranny for $300 (this was back in 1990) and I stuffed a 472 Caddy in between the fenders. LOTS of work, had to make extended motor mount plates, Carpice Station Wagon front coils, make a new tranny crossmember, shorten the driveshaft, was a nightmare but worth every second the first time I stomped on the gas. What a balls out rush. 2.27:1 V6 Gears and it would twist the speedo all the way around to 20mph, it was shaking so bad I thought it would fall apart. No stock G Body was ment to run over 140mph and she still had alot left in her.

I really don't have the money to get a real exhaust system right now, the Purple Hornies will work fine for right now.

My plans for the future are

Mandrel bent 2.5" exhaust
X-pipe
flowmaster 40's
Electric cut outs.
GN stainless exits

you dont need that much exhaust.till you get a bigger cam or motor.remember back pressure is your friend.to save brain cells. have the exhaust exit after the rear wheels.under the car is very bad.blood gas level test are not fun.

When I get that exhaust I'll be running a 383.

Kepp up the good work on the monte"thumbsup".

Wow i wish i could find one of these for my first car:-(.
Thanks, patience is key, I had been searching for a Monte for about 2 years. I never though I would find an Aerocoupe!

Thanks,
Shaun

Have fun with the paint burning off the headers and mufflers, the headers' paint on my truck lasted until I started it. Thinking back I should have bought ceramic coated. But dont worry they have yet to leak or rust through in two years. I am looking forward to seeing you finish putting on those parts. We also need an after exhaust video.
