4PK Setups, Tips, Tricks and Help

hey harley, any ideas why my HS-645MG is humming loudly in neutral? even when i go full lock, i can still hear it hum. i swapped back to my dx3r setup and it doesn't do this. on the 4pk, i have the rxsetup (?) set to normal with the C2 setup (604FS rx). on my mrc, ch 1 is the HS-645MG, ch 2 is a sidewinder micro, with the CC BEC in ch 3. the CC BEC is set to 6v from a 2-cell lipo. did i miss a setting for the analog servers or something else?

After switching it normal mode did you switch the radio off than back on?

Changing it to normal should have fixed it :?

Thanks, it's working this morning. I swear I power cycled my 4pk last night... maybe I shouldn't drink so much when working in the garage. ;-)

Actually... I am having this same issue with all three of my servos (FS, RS, and DIG). I thought it might have been due to low voltage since I didn't have my BEC yet. (Just got here yesterday) Maybe I'll have to recheck thats is in "Normal Mode". I know for a fact I have turned it off several times. :(

You need to change it and turn it off immediately after executing it, don't even leave the screen before powering down.

I think I ended up doing something like holding down the right and left d-pad at the same time and it rebooted the controller and then I verified on the main screen. (Based on RTFM )

But again... I will have to go back to the Hooch and verify tonight.

Just to confirm, you are having the problem with non-digital servos?

Holding down left and right on the D-pad? I don't see how that's possible, since it is a rocker switch. And normal mode is not verified on the main display as far as I remember, C1 and C2 modes are but that is not the same.

Yep... non digital servos. I will get you the exact models tonight.

Ok... I downloaded the manual (http://manuals.hobbico.com/fut/4pk-2_4ghz-manual.pdf) and double checked myself.

Looks like you are right on how to set Normal servo function versus High Speed. Page 46. I could have sworn that when you went to the RXSYS menu to choose Normal or HighSpeed the second item on the page is something like "Execute" and you had to push a key combination to execute the change. Now that I think of it, maybe it was + and - at the same time but the manual does not reflect this. I am gonna have to go get the controller cause this is gonna drive me batty!

As for display, on the default main screen there is a litte 4 quadrent square on the lower right side. The top left quadrent indicates what mode the servos are set in. "High" = High Speed "Norm" = Normal. Pulled this from Page 21.

It very well could all be a hallucination and I just totally dorked up the setup process!

I think I do remember the high vs normal on the screen now. The +/- to execute is used in several place, but I don't believe it is used on this function. I know it is used for model select, model copy, and a couple others.

On my display, the bottom line is showing all the way to left. when i throttle it moves to side i am throttling. I cant figure out how to change this. I would like it centered. The throttle and the next one down work the same. but bottom one is off center?

Alright... here we go. Got the rig... now for the ugly details. First what I am currently running;

4PK with R604FS
Front steering servo: HiTEC HS-645MG
DIG and Rear steer sevos: JRacing Z650M
Axial AE-1 ESC
7 Cell NiMH 1500mAh

second is what I am adding in the short term (as in being soldered or shipped as I type)
CC BEC at 6V
FXR-Pro
Removing Rear Steering
2S Lipo 2200mAh

At this point I don't have a multimeter so I don't know how my battery pack is doing so I will assume its "ok". (Yes yes... making an @$$ out of me... I know)

I verified that the 4PK is in Normal servo mode and set for C2 Rx.

So what I am getting is a buzzing noise from the servos at neutral, any combination of the three servos. Now if I actuate the servos, the buzzing goes away but sometimes comes back.

I have been hesitant to post this up untill I atleast replaced the ESC and added the BEC and was even considering holding off till the LiPO showed up. I figured it might be an issue with lack of electrical "umph" due to my anemic setup but since Swell Searcher mentioned the same problem with the same make/model of servo I figured I would chime in.

You have a mix setup with this channel. What is your setup? What is channel 4 controlling?

Running 3 servos off the stock Axial ESC is not a great idea as you know. The BEC would be a must IMO. With your servos making noise until you move them it sounds like more of a problem of them trying to center themselves. I wouldn't run more than just a single 645 off of the Axial ESC and see how it acts.

The only thing you need to do with the radio is set it to Normal, everything else is going to be setup issues with your other electronics.

I have been building a Wheely King based Monster truck and I wanted to have rear steer and also be able to crab walk. I found all the info to make my 4PK do just as I wanted it to. Thanks for all the time you have put into this thread you are AWESOME Josh. :-P"thumbsup"

Harley, does anyone offer a skin for these radios yet?? I know you have one, but I cant find anything for the 4pk...

Harley, you can mark one more tally in the "Spektrum user goes Futaba" category "thumbsup" Thanks for the great writeups and help!!
