Cheap Rally car???

How about a jeep grand cherokee with a 5.2L. Cheap and powerful. suspension built for abuse with plenty of parts available. Just My 2 cents.

my vote goes for the rabbit

it a freakin work horse but you really have watch engine temps.

If he was going with a Jeep, I'd recommend a regular Cherokee and look towards the Jeepspeed ranks for info on hop-ups and safety equipment.

I still think my original suggestion is the best.

I would get a Hyundai Accent or something like that so you can have the newest, most reliable car for the money...

Or I would just get a Subaru.

Older Subaru Legacy Wagon... they have turbos.

Does it have to be FWD? What an older MR2? Or a Miata?

Out of everyones choices I'd definately say a Subaru but I've never once seen one for te price range your looking for, even old beat to sh!t ones... My choice is still a vw, like one guy said they're workhorses! And cheap

Buy an Escort, they're been rallied for years and there are tons of motor sport parts for them.

The ones here are not the same as the ones that are in the UK and rallied with.

Most RallyX's do not allow or have a class for Trucks/SUV's.

early model dodge colt. i knew someone from my home town had one and we used to abuse the crap out of that thing. never changed the oil jumped it and every thing else. lasted 2 years.

Your best bet is an older Subaru like a 2.5RS, though not terribly cheap.
Cheapest one I could find is 4500.00 the cheapest running not totaled subi I could find is at least 3000.00. It is my first choice, but the class I would have to race in would be against wrx's and sti's. I could go rear wheel drive as well, but there are alot more front wheel drive 4 bangers out there then rear wheelers.

i say screw it and got vw rabbit there are a few of them that rally and they are a blast and it would be different than the normal cars you always see"thumbsup"

I was thinking long and hard about it and I started thinking I am going to need parts, I just am worried about the parts support with me beating the hell out of it every couple of weeks...

Why not a Volvo...they are tanks!

Don't they weigh as much as a tank too?

Early 90's Buick Skylark"thumbsup". The 3.1L v6 is an awesome little motor and they handle great

I think Im going to try to stay with a 4 banger.

Cant find the scooby's cheap enough for my liking
It doesnt have to be front wheel but I would like it due to control. I would destroy an MR2 or miata in the first heat I think.

Supposedly I could use a jeep, but it would have to be run in two wheel drive and I would be really worried about roll overs, plus they really dont have a lot of power.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
As of right now I thinking Im leaning pretty heavy to the neon from 95 to 98.
After some reading it looks like a lot can be done to the 2.0l 16 valve, plus parts support and durability for the type of abuse I plan to put it through seems to be on par.
Any other ideas?

Check out www.modernperformance.com for just about everything you might need for a Neon.

Things I recommend: make sure the timing belt is in good shape (if it breaks, the pistons will hit the valves. That's why I went with a 2.4 swap...2.4 is a non-interference motor but still virtually identical to the original 2.0). Replace the water pump when you replace the timing belt.

If it's a manual: Booger shift bushings and a Booger solid bobble strut will firm up the shifts and helps keep the motor from rocking around so much. If you're a real glutton for NVH, you can get a solid front mount as well.

If you think you'll be running through water on courses, keep the stock airbox and just hack the cover to increase the airflow. The airbox will protect the filter from getting soaked and there are very few CAI's out there that offer any real gains in HP. Here's mine:

Ty, go check and see what the local scrap yards have alot of spare parts for. I know down here they have a whole row of ford taurus' and 3/4 row of neons.

Very exciting. If there was a club in my area I'd already have a car all set to go. Not really anything on there right now, but keep a lookout on rallyclassified.com

Can't go wrong with a Neon as said. I too and a Suby freak but I've always heard it's really expensive to keep up with parts repairs. I'm still going to eventually buy a beat up 2.5 Impreza and further the beatings.
