Hey guys,

Looks like alot of good info/people here as this is similar to pirate4x4 except RC is a LOT cheaper which I look forward to.
Anyways heres my dilemma, Im an ex marine/ex rock crawling competitor who is now paralyzed in a wheelchair/chest down. I have no real hand function but as Im sitting here typing this up now with a pencil sticking out of a glove It is very hard to drive an RC with these two pistol grip radios and so forth I inquire for help/suggestions please.
Im 35 and like to have good time, hang with my girls alot, drinks etc but well buy you dinner/beer/trade parts whatever for your time/assistance. Maybe with good help I'll try a comp or two see if I can get another crawling trophy. Im not an idiot, don't need smart ass remarks or waste my time if your not interested just move awn. Im looking for honest new friend/help if you can come awn over... Or if you have any ideas or can help me build something trick (like a drive up charging station, or a tool for my hand that has rings to slip on my fingers with 5/50 cord to a fishing hook so if I roll car over i can have on my lap to flip over) I have lots of great ideas just need your brain power/hands. I was an offroad shop owner/fabricator so i have knowledge but need you to help since RC is completely new to me.
So what I was wondering is anyone locally or by phone I suppose willing to help me out with questions ideas on how I might be able to enjoy this fine RC crawler I was lucky enough to come across.
What I have is comp style ready AXIAL all setup with tube chassis/weighted rims??? beadlocks etc but desperately needs frnt/rear dig if both are possible?
I also have a brand new in box losi comp rtr i wanna build/trade
and just got a new platinum slash 4x4 too that id love to bash....

Really my biggest challenge for me is (radio) I need a stick radio i think so i can drive all my cars using both hands (pencils) to steer throttle while i look at car instead of controller. I can drive crawler now but its not pretty, slash is to fast and almost impossible to control for me.
I see these weighted wheels (low boy pendulum wheels) pretty same as us running water in our tires for years now??? Whats skinny on those?

Anyways look forward to your guidance

Knife"thumbsup"

First off I'd like to say THANK YOU for what you and the other soldiers are doing to protect out country.
Whether or not your injuries happened at home or overseas, I'm sorry that it had to happen.

I'm sure there are more than than enough people in your area that would be more than willing to help you out. With me living in Indiana, it would be a bit of a road trip to come out there.

There are always new things and new ways to enjoy RC Crawling. Your disability in NO way will get in the way of having fun, especially if you get a good partner to help you out. People on this forum are VERY helpful and will usually go out of their way to make you feel welcome and help you out whenever they can.

I wish you the best of luck finding a buddy to help you out, i'm sure you'll have no problem with it at all! "thumbsup"

"thumbsup" 2x. The stick control sound like the best bet for you. If you purchase a star you can check out the for sale or trade section to see if you can find one. Below is a link I found, hope it helps you out. -Glenn

I sure can't drive up there but I do admire your courage and will for life.
There is a local around here who drives racing buggies with a stick radio. He is pretty damn good at it too.
As far as I recall he uses some kind of adapter that screws on to the sticks of the radio and then gets strapped on the prosthetics. Excuse the terminology, but pretty much you can get the idea.
Needs a lot of practice but it is worth it.

Thank you for keeping our freedom i sure hope someone out there close to your area can help you out good luck

well if you have the possibility to move one hand or just one finger with a 4 channel stick radio you can work things out. In a 4 channel radio both sticks move up-down-left-right so you can control speed and direction just moving one single stick. That should be an easy solution. Keep up the spirit.

It was my honor........... but thank you for positive remarks.

Well give me some ideas would yah. please

What type of radio would be best for this or running multiple cars and has metal servos and what not. My crawler now has a hi-tec.

I was thinking spektrum 6 or 7 series? So your saying one stick could do all functions????
WOW that might be best for control.. Can you make steering one side gas/brake other right, I thought thats how they operated??
man I hope theres some super knowledgable builder around here cause i need alot of help. Please pass this thread around to your buddy's for me please.

btw whats best lipo charger i could buy?
i was thinking a racers edge2000 119.00 or a dynamite passport 129.00

Hi Knife, like the others said, thanks for your service.

I would say the Specktrum dxi6 would be your best bet. You will have 4 3 position channels and 2 2 position channels with that controller. I have one myself. The rx's are cheaper than dx2-3 series rx's. With a few mods to the dx6i, you can turn it into the same ole stick radio you had as a kid. The 6 channels is more than enough and I think it will take up to 10-20 different RC car models, so with enough rx's, you could run everything. Remember that your current rx's will not work with the dx6i and would have to get new rx's. Just will take time to get used to.

AS far as a charger goes, I do not know anything about the two you mentioned. I know the hyperion chargers work really well. I have a mrc super brain 989 and works great, other have different opinions on it. The hyperion chargers will charge pretty much any kind of battery, and is why it is so popular.

Welcome to the addiction of RC Crawling!!!!

man I hope there's some super knowledgable builders around here.

:lmao:

Welcome to RC Crawler, Knife!

On your stick radio you could have fwd/rev and "up and down" motion and steering "rt and left" on the same stick. One hand, one stick would opperate your truck, might be tricky getting use to this though. The other stick would do nothing. I gather that you only have limited use with one hand, is that correct?

Well, the answer to that is yes you can work out everything with just one stick you would have just to get used to it.
Now my friend just a question what are your motorius capabilities? I am asking because I haven't understand much on your hand movement. Can you move your hands? One...both... as having a stick radio is the best choice for what I understand, it is also a bit bulky....
The spectrum is a good choice, not my personal favorite but good enough. You could also think of finding a used Futaba 9C earth radio. It's not 2.4 ghz but you can find very cheap receivers for it.

I looked at the Grand Junction summer series schedule (which is located in the regional section in the forums), they are having a comp in Moab June 6th. Might be a great time to get some help/knowledge from some experienced folks.
I too am in a wheelchair, but my paralysis is from the waist down only. I'm also very new to the RC crawler world, and there are uncertainties for me as well.
Good luck, and keep crawlin!!

I'd be more than willing to help, but like jcboof said Indiana's a bit to far. The stick radio can be used with both controls on one stick or one on each stick. The comp listed above should be full of people willing to help. You might wanna make a post with a link to this thread in the Utah section, as I'm sure more locals look there than in Newbie, there's alot of guys in that area and I'm sure plenty will be glad to assist you in becoming a great crawler. Best of luck to you.

Welcome to RC crawling Knife!!! Thank you so much for your service to our country! I wish I would have taken the opportunity to serve myself, but didnt.

First off, the Dx6i is probably going to be your best bet for a radio. It is 2.4 ghz and will control all the RC's that you own. I haven't run one myself, but I know a couple guys that do and they do pretty well with it.

Second, the Racer's Edge charger is all you could want and more in my opinion. I have one and will swear by it. If you can find one that comes with the metal carrying case, get it, its worth the money.

I too am paralyzed from the waist down and understand how hard it is for guys in chairs to get into this hobby. I will guess that 98% of the people in rc crawling will help you in any way shape or form they can. I have been crawling 1:1 and rc's for 10 years now and finally won my first comp in rc's a couple weeks ago. So everything is possible for us. Keep your head up and if you ever have questions send me a message! "thumbsup""thumbsup"

here is an option maybe a little pricey but what about a camera system in the crawler as well. you could just stay in one place and view it from a screen. doesnt your guys army fly planes like that?
what ever you do "thumbsup""thumbsup" we had a guy where i am from that is in a chair and he used to run nitros with us. the best was when ever he need to tune or work on his buggy he had his own table right there in front of him>
good luck in what ever you go with

hey knife,
welcome to the world of r/c crawlin!!!
sorry to hear about your paralasis !!!
as far as a radio is concerned the one you mentioned has always gotten
good reviews!! as far as a lipo charger is concerned , i have heard countless say the A6 from hobby king is a very good charger for
cheap! its the one i am considering!! i still am on the fence about
lipo, i have ALMOST talked myself into going in that direction.
by the way you should have some awsome place's to play in your backyard , so to speak !!!!

no hands, barely any wrist movement, i use a glove to type this, and drive throttle on pistol grip laying down then left palm on steering wheel while it sits on my lap.
like i said its not pretty but its ok for now till i figure out great way to adapt a remote.
Im gonna need front dig though cause i know how to use that very well in real world

I use a DX6i on my MOA 2.2 & my MOA super comp rigs.

I have it setup as follows:

2 speed controls. Front speed control in Rudder, rear speed control in Throttle.

left stick - vertical axis = 4wd when mix is on, rear dig when mix is off
left stick horizontal axis = front dig, right is forward, left is reverse

right stick - horizontal axis = front axle steering
right stick - vertical axis = rear axle steering on my Super.

If you have any questions on setup, I can post exactly how I have my mixes setup.
