Ford 6.0 diesel motor

what is the deal with these motors, are they crappy or what.

ive been looking for a truck, and this is thew most common motor it seems. should it be avoided, i also saw a lawyer firm asking for owners of the 6.0 for some lemon law suit commercial.

im looking at one that has 100k miles on it..
 
please stay away, buy anything else!!

i work on those shitpiles for a living, its been more than enough for me to never own one. we're replacing them with anywhere between 100k and 180k with internal engine failures. ive done 25 or so in the last year..

the stacked steel head gaskets are junk, the head bolts stretch, the EGR system is a ticking time bomb, injectors fail left and right, the plastic keepers for the roller lifters break letting the lifter rotate and destroy the cam, and the turbos fail pretty often, all under 200k miles.

i diagnose an average of 2 engines with injector failures a week. fortunately we send those to the ford dealer because we're too backed up with everything else to waste 3-4 days replacing injectors. ours are in E450 vans so everything has to be removed and the engine has to be rolled to one side to access the injectors. on pickups they remove the body to access everything, we don't have that option. engine replacements take up a solid 40hrs..
 
Like everyone else said Tom, DO NOT buy one, they are piles of shit. I actually find it hard to believe that you found one that made it to 100k it's probably been repaired 10 times.

7.3L are good motors and Ford has the best back seat if you are getting a 4 door.
Cummins are all good but Dodge has a horrible back seat.
Duramax is good, Chevys ride good and have a good back seat.

Stay away from the 6.0, if you see one run far and fast.
 
My brothers had 2 tons with 7.3's for his work trucks. He's had good service from them, allot better than the 6.0 my Dads got.

My uncles been a GM mechanic all his life. He drives a Cummins. That says ALLOT to me. You couldn't pay me,my dad or my brother to drive a Duraturd.

It's hard to beat the decades of research and development behind a Cummins. The older models that aren't choked back so far with all the emission BS are better IMHO. A shade tree mechanic can still work on them and they will run better....longer.

All that being said, they all run good and do pull great. It's my honest opinion if a guy wants to buy a ton that will last....Cummins is where it's at. After a Cummins, from what's out there now, I'd probably pick a 7.3
 
the 7.3L is the best diesel engine ford ever has or ever will use. they used the 7.3 from ~89 up to 03, they got rid of it because of emissions compliance problems. its not uncommon to see a 7.3L run 300-500k miles.

unfortunately ford is going down hill for diesels. the 6.0 was junk. it was replaced by the 6.4L which had problems from the get go and was shitcanned 3yrs later. what does that tell you about that momtor?

now ford has their new brilliant design, the 6.7L, no longer outsourcing to international they're building this one themselves. my job just put me and a bunch of other guys through a powertroke training, it was eye opening. theyre getting to the point now that if the oil doesnt get changed on time, they won't hardly run, if they start at all. theyve now got 2 water pumps and 6 thermostats, for the two completely separate cooling systems. one for the block/heads, one for the EGR system and fuel system. the 2 water pumps flow over 100gpm, theyre getting to the point where you cant go more than about 8oz low on coolant before running into cooling problems.. the new 6.7 is also physically so large due to all the junk added onto it that they can't fit into a ford van body, which is great for us, we won't have to worry about those at our shop.

If you can find a '98-'02 Ram 2500 or 3500 in good condition get it. My fathers 98 3500 is still running better than the crap '08 Ford we had despite being in bad shape.
If you build it right, they can last 700k miles.

If by any particular circumstances you come upon an '08 Super Duty just RUN. They have crap eco-weeny programming and "environmental exhaust cleaner" system.
Unless you don't mind paying 5k-10k a year on fuel.

Yeah you can remove it, but it's not worth it at all.

my first full size was a 98 ? dodge 1500 360 2nd year of the new body style .. i had so many things go bad on it .. so i fear dodge with my experience..

are all dodge diesels cummins ? ive heard the motor is the best but rest isnt so great.
 
The reason you are finding so many used 6.0ls with 100k on them is that the engine warrenty expires at 100k miles. I agree pass.

The problem with the Cummins is the truck thats wrapped around them. The 6.7l cummins is not what the 5.9l was. All late 2007 early 2008 LD diesels from the big 3 have DPFs and all the emmisions crap on them.

All fullsizes should be diesel IMO gassers are a joke.

So the 8.1l and 6.8l is a joke? Buy a clue:roll:

It doesn't. Extra fuel is injected to increase the EGT during a regen to burn of the crap in the DPF.

yep, also in CA theyre gonna be sold with 5in idle timers on them. no more letting it idle like youve always done with your old diesels, without any throttle input they'll shut themselves off after 5min. thanks EPA!!

im a diesel mechanic and diesel fanatic and even though i've always liked ford trucks, you couldn't GIVE me an 03-up ford diesel. they just keep getting worse.

im currently shopping for an 04-07 diesel dodge megacab 4x4. theyre much harder to find than fords but once i get one im not letting it go!!
