Ford 6.0 diesel motor

all fullsizes should be diesel IMO gassers are a joke
I've got a V-10 in a '00 1 ton dually that is a pulling mother(I haul cattle with it)I would have rather had the 7.3, but none were to be found(a lot of the 6.0's). My 2000 has been a great truck though.
On another note, I was talking to a tech at the local Dodge dealer(a former neighbor) and he was telling me that the only real problem with the Cummins 6.7 is the EGR system. Give them a bit and they will have the bugs worked out of it. Put the Cummins in the SuperDuties and back it up with the Allison tranny. That would be a truck.....
 
When I was in the drilling field we used exclusively Ford's. I had a F-550 7.3 that was one hell of a truck, on average I rolled out from the yard 20k+, if you want I will tell you what all was on the back. That truck got 15mpg pretty much no matter what I had on it. Minor flaws with it nothing much.


We got a 06 550 6.0.....5 times, before I could change the oil. The motor would go ghost. I was at on of the Ford places one of the times. They asked me how often we changed the oil, I told them I only changed it once, it had 20k on it.

It always sucked a injector or something and had the motor replaced before the 3ooo mark...
 
So im now looking for a clean 98-03 7.3 and no real good ones have caught my eye just yet, im stuck on the diesel pureley for gas milage.

my brother jim has the 04 f250 v-10 6.8 and it has been a great truck so far for him but the milage average city driving with no load has been 11 mpg. The guy at ford said something about the 6.4 being a good motor but it had a poor gas milage problem, he said they changed the gearing to X-XX i forget which he said and it helped with the problem.

does anyone have any insite if this sounds correct, i know dieselfuel said they stopped making it after 3 years, i just dont know if it was cause they were junk or if the 6.8 was just an emmisions choice.

thanks everyone for the great insite, this forum has for sure saved me from making a mistake on the 6.0 since that would have been likley choice with the flood of those out there.
 
If you want a 7.3l super duty 99'-03' is the only MY available. Ford started producing the 99' early in 98' and made a short run of the 98' heavy duty truck which is a different body style. I would try to find a truck as close to 03' as you can. Around 03' Ford switched from the D50 to the D60 front axle. The later 7.3l also had a little more power. I know its difficult to find a decent 7.3l at a fair price. They are still out there though, look around and don't be in hurry. My friend was looking at a 00' 7.3l with under 50k on it, the truck looked like new. They were asking $18,800 for it, don't know if he bought it.

The 6.4l is getting better mileage with Fords current reflashes and 3.55 gears. The engine is fairly solid but there is a lot of radiator issues, DPF and emissions issues and the engine likes to make oil.(Fuel dillution) Some guys have been getting UOAs with 7% fuel in the oil.

A little late to warn you now but I had an 05 6.0 Powerjoke and lemon lawed it at 18,000 miles a year after I bought it. Bought a 07 Silverado Classic. Not sure why I decided to try a ford in the first place since I've always been a Chevy fan. The Ford itself was nice but always worrying if it was going to leave me stranded sucked. My Duramax has been trouble free!
 
That 00' and 03' look real nice but the price is high for 00' IMO. Of course prices are little different in Socal. Personally I'd go with no lift or very little lift.

I believe thats the same truck we saw up at sac raceway last year....flogging the piss out of it.....I think he had his ecm reprogrammed and then had a edge on top of that......

have you seen that chevelle with the stock duramax in it that ran high 11's. That thing was sick."thumbsup"
 
If it's the same Chevelle I'm thinking of, it was built by PPE. I'm using their tuner in my truck along with a few other goodies. PPE tuners are awesome. If and when funds allow, I plan on putting an LBZ motor in my 55 Chevy.

Might be a different Chevelle then. PPE's is a 70 and painted green.

I run her everyday to and from work! But actually no, not on a track. I've only got a transgo jr. and can't afford a fully built trans yet. I need to be mindfull how I hammer her. She's a lot of fun though! And I only have the 225hp tune and boost stick.

great motor,but the truck leaves much to be desired.
unless its a larami,the interior is about as comfortable as a cardboard box.
and the body is easy to dent,my cousin has a 02,we was loading tires,no wheels. threw a tire in th bed,put a dent in it.:roll:

the 7.3's I have had have had very few issues,and I'm VERY hard on my trucks. the wiring harness that is a part of the valve cover gasket. that a issue. they are around 100 bucks and a 1hr job.
the idler/tensioner pullies have sealed bearings. the bearings have come apart on me more than once. so after 100,000 swap em out.

other than that its just the vacume pumps,alter.,ect. stuff you expect to have to replace.

oh,if its 4x4,expect that at around 200,000 to replace the front bearing assembly on both sides of the front axle.

I have had 5 7.3's,usually get em with about 100-150 on em
drive em till around 300 and these are the problems I have had with em.

the 6.0 was crap so they went to 6.4,if the 6.4 is so good why would they be swaping to the new motor they got comming out?

stay away from the 6.0 and 6.4 niether can handle the heat. now if your not hauling much really.I guess they may work for ya.
I pull alot,everywhere I go almost. and I have found the oil cooled turbos I have had [94,95,96]produce me more horsepower than the water cooled

Emissions. The 2011 6.7l is compliant with the new tier of emissions requirements and Ford also decided to severe all ties with Navistar and build their own diesel engine. In about 3-4 years another tier of emissions requirements will have to be met.
