RPMJ showed me a used Kysoho DRX on ebay a few weeks ago. We had it listed in the 8th scale open rally class for our series, but I never thought a ton about them being a nitro and a difficult to get Kyosho car. I started readying around and looking at dimensions and learned that it is actually bigger then the HPI WR8 in every dimension. It is based on a 1/8th scale buggy, surprisingly light weight and parts are easier to get then I originally thought.

Specs:
Kyosho 1/9th scale DRX rally
Length: 563mm (22.17 inches)
Width: 260mm (10.24 inches)
Height: 187mm (7.36 inches)
Wheelbase: 316mm (12.44 inches)
Tread (F/R): 215mm / 215mm (8.46 inches)
Tire(F/R): Φ93×38mm / Φ93×38mm
Gear Ratio: 8.86:1
Weight: 2,600g (approx.) (5.73 pounds)

HPI WR8 (supposed 1/8th scale)
Chassis length: 485mm ( 19.09 inches)
Width: 227mm (8.94 inches)
Height: 172 (6.77 inches)
Wheelbase: 300mm (11.81 inches)

Tamiya DF03RA (1/10th scale)
Length: 407mm (16 inches)
Width: 186mm (7.32 inches)
Height: 155mm (6.1 inches)
Chassis weight: 1,112g (2.45 pounds (no electronics)

It starts with one.

Kyosho DRX Ford Fiesta.
Comes as a RTR nitro. The first thing I did was pull the 18 motor out and all the nitro parts. There was a list posted on Infernosonly.com with the parts needed to convert this to brushless, but as I quickly found out many of the parts were not needed. Of the 5 parts that are supposed to be used for the conversion I have only used two, the Electric motor mount and the battery tray.
Here is how it started

The electronics already in. ;D
_MG_0669small.jpg

The motor and pinion are just for mock up I have a Mamba Max Pro and 2400KV 550 can SC system going in. Still thinking about a better servo to put in. I will be using this Max amps 5450MAH 3 cell battery.

I still need to rebuild all the differentials with better oil and add a few gears to the inside of the center diff. Probably going to make an under body as well. Hopefully the motor, ESC and MOD1 pinions show up tomorrow so I can at least take it for a short test run.

I will get some more updates soon and progress on DRX #2 soon.

i want one but only if it was electric i have never had luck with nitro

i wanna see more of the suby next to it

Thats bada$$! Cant wait to see video!

I can probably arrange that.;-)

Ok, here we go...

Figured you would've got the Subi ???

I didn't want the generic Subaru blue body. Plus the Fiesta was the only one that I could not find the body for sale by itself, so I got that. I did already order a clear Subaru body for it anyway.:ror:

May be off topic, but since this car is based on a buggy, would it be gt8 legal?

I have no idea what you are talking about, sorry.

Hmmmmmmmmm...

That's pretty cool!!

:ror::ror:

Right? Makes you want to order one right?:ror:

Did you see the photos it is electric."thumbsup"

why did i have to look in here..."thumbsup"

Well then your really not going to want to look in here in the next couple of days.

Here is some more progress

Here is the differential gear I was talking about before, it comes with 2 spider gears inside, but to add to the durability of it I added 2 more gears bringing the total to 4. The center diff and each axle diff has an identical differential only the ring gears are different from the center spur.

I never realized how big a mod 1 pinion was til I put it on. This is a 15 tooth mod 1, which is about the size of a 20 tooth 32 pitch pinion.
_MG_0680small.jpg

The tires are pretty scale and are surprisingly soft. Kyosho also offers three different inner foams for the tires from hard to soft.
_MG_0681small.jpg

The front foam bumper is really large and soft, should absorb the impacts really well. Kyosho was actually really smart and it is raised up to keep it from rubbing on the ground.

#1 as a roller

#2 almost a roller
_MG_0684small.jpg

#2 has a Tekin 5.5 redline sensored motor for starts. It is also using the recommended conversion chassis, whereas #1 is using the stock chassis which I drilled for the motor mount and battery tray. #2 also had to be drilled for some parts, but the motor mounting holes were already on the chassis.

The kids together.
_MG_0689small.jpg

Here you can see how tight the tolerances are between the battery and spur gear. There is a lot of room on the chassis for mounting everything, but the chassis is not quite wide enough to keep the entire battery tray on it.
_MG_0690small.jpg

You may also notice that with the electric conversion chassis on #2 the motor is mounted on the other side of the differential.
_MG_0694small.jpg

For reference the bottom of #2
_MG_0695small.jpg

The bottom of #1, to me this is the largest difference between the two chassis'. Notice the large holes in chassis #1 (blue).

Thats it for tonight. Enjoy.

SWEET!!!

Hmmm...what to do now, can't let John drive his rally alone.

They are always more fun with friends."thumbsup"

I got impatient before my SCT 2400kv combo showed up and threw a mamba max 2 cell lipo and Traxxas BL motor in.

This is what I got.

Both DRXs got Savox 1258TG servos. At 6 volts are 166 oz of torque and a .08 speed.
_MG_0698small.jpg

The electric conversion chassis has the steering servo relocated, but we decided instead of moving all the steering linkage around we would just line up the stock chassis and put the servo in the same location as stock.

Both ready to run

Hard to tell them apart, I started the next step and started setting the body apart.

More later, RPMJ and I are just blazing through these builds!:ror:

When does the roll cage go on?

Good question!

The way I drive it definitely needs one. The body is also more brittle then we had hoped. I already have several cracks starting to form, I dumped a lot of Shoo Goo on the body and so far it seems to be helping. Im trying to figure out an underbody now. Either something custom made or figure out if an Inferno body will work.

Is this whole set up similar to the inferno? I get you on the WR8 not really being 1/8 scale. It's more like the old super nitros 1/9 scale. wonder if the proline rs10 or whatever body would fit this. if so cheaper replacements than from kyosho.

I was almost thinking the DBX body would fit under the shell seeing they are based off the same chassis.

I forgot all about having my camera with me yesterday when you were driving it. Wish I had taken some jump shots.

Very cool though. You and Rodney are a bad influence on everyone :flipoff:

More rally goodness! Awesome cars.

They are and they drive fantastic!

I think it is smaller. The DRX shares a lot of the same components as the as DMT, DRT, AND DBX. The Inferno uses a different chassis that mounts the motor on the opposite side as the DRX, it also has different A arms, and shock towers after that I am not sure what the other differences are. The HPI, I guess it is suppose to be true 1/8th scale, so maybe Kysoho is off in their measurements, either way someone messed up their calculations.

Yeah the DBX or DBX VE body would probably work pretty well, but it won't be sealed. I was thinking the Side Guards would help seal the chassis off to keep everything out.

I didn't think about photos either I was to excited just to drive.:ror:

very cool indeed!

Thanks buddy.

this is friggin awwessommmmmeee, love rally.

Me too, I am what some will call obsessed. :ror:
