The Styrene Challenge #2 - Flat bottom boat

I figure since I was last in challenge #1 that I wouldn't make anyone wait this time. My flat bottom is finished. On to the pics...
And after a few hours of painting and final assembly...

Like I said before I started this, I'm not a boat guy but I am learning a ton doing these projects. It was actually fun getting the brain on the tread mill. Oh, one final pic for scale...

Thanks for looking!

ok, I guess I have drug my feet long enough...so, here we go...

Like I said at the start of this, I had a very limited supply of materials, so had to make the most of them...

1 full sheet of .75mm (6" x 12" size)
1 full sheet of .5mm (same as above)
several med size partial pieces of both the above & a bunch of misc scraps
and a bunch of dimensional strips of varying sizes - not a full package of any of it...

anyway... on to the pics...

bottom and the two ends...used the .75mm sheet for these parts

Bottom ribs in place...

dryfitting the sides...used the .5mm sheet for these, layered

building up the front bulkhead support structure - floor ribs in place...

front bulkhead complete - floor cross bracing added in...

You have seen this one already - but it shows the side rub rail & gunwales...

kind of forgot to take pics of it in the silver basecoat - looked kind of neet...oh well...on to the finished product...

Tried to do a bit of realistic ageing/weathering/wearing - whatever you want to call it - putting scratches and wear in places a real one would have them...I know it looks white in the pictures, but it really is the silver base coat showing through...

Started working on a set of oars, and a trolling type motor, but I dont think I will have them done in time for the end of this challenge

Finally got to paint mine, I wish I could've done more, but between the shop being busy, and getting ready for a trip to PA, I just didn't have as much time as I wanted to spend on it.

And here's the finished product, (at least finished for the challenge), I plan to do a little more to it when I have the time. It's a true 1:10 scale 10ft boat, it's 12in L, 4.5in W. (I had to bring it to the shop today just so I would have time to get some decent pics).

managed to finish my trolling motor in time.

Picking up a "special" order of styrene yesterday sure helped with this little guy...

and a couple of other pictures that I forgot to post earlier...

making the grab handles...

and a good share of the tools I use...

if I can offer one small piece of advice to someone just starting out - cut your pieces just a hair bigger than what you really want/need, then carefully shape your piece removing the excess - it is easy to remove material ... hard to add that tiny sliver that it needs cause you cut it too small...

Should be interesting for sure, but it was definitely fun! I can't wait till the next challenge.

very nice work. Guess I will have to get in on the next one. Good thing I scratch build a lot of my 1/24 and 1/25 stuff.

I started with 1/24 1/25 models when I was about 6 (so 22 years ago lol) and started scratch building alot of stuff. Its fun and you will definitely have to join in on the next one. The more the merrier!

I started out with the 1/24-25th scale stuff as well (far too many years ago!) - didnt really "make" a lot of stuff, but did do a fair amount of customizing. Comparitively, 1/10th scale is a walk in the park!
