Must watch video hd gear mod

Definitely, I've mentioned having him do the mod before and plan to have it done. Just not going to run them until I get to tear apart a blown up diff and see the destruction!;)

It is awesome that BHB offers up a FREE mod so your YXL doesn't get treated like a soccer ball and then introduced to the baseball side of sports. Kudos to him for sharing his knowledge as well. You might not have blown your gears yet but you WILL and it would be nice to have a modded set right next to you so the downtime is nill.

Thanks Mike!!

I can guarantee that the modded HD gears will never break !! seriously. I've been completely blown away by their performance!! And yes I'm offering the free mods still but I've been staying out of town week to week day to day... I can definitely still get them done but they might not be back in the mail the next day... but I'm still more than happy to help a fellow Basher out!!

And honestly guys I think I've made my XL Bulletproof!! I've been going through multiple battery packs on 6s driving like a fool and everything's holding tight... well except for an occasional tie rod or a severed CVD !

BHB,

I've been able to drive my YXL a lot more lately and have been impressed with how well it's held up. I'm not surprised you've had such good luck after performing the mods you have! Glad you're still enjoying it. I know I am! The longer I go without breaking something the more brave/stupid I get hah

And thank you for continuing to offer the mod! I have a Dremel and have debated doing it myself but I know I'd be doubting myself/ the results the whole time

It's fairly simple... you just have to make sure you take enough off and remember that if you feel like you took a little too much you can always shim before the bearing to engage the pinion back into the ring gear.
Make sure that you go from the tip of the tooth 90 degrees to the shaft of the pinion and use a reinforced wheel or feel free to send it to me bud !

Dremel 426 Fiberglass Reinforced Cut-Off Wheels 1- 1/4" Dia., .045" Thick https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004UDH9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_orECxb9EKEEMB

Something like that work?
I'll have to watch your video again where you discuss it! When you're test fitting it what are you looking for as far as changes between how it fit beforehand and after? Thanks again!

Yes,

Well before hand it sounds like a Haut-Volant Duck call... You'll have bird shit on your car before you know it :lmao:

After its installed buttery smooth.."thumbsup"
When I remove my center cvd and spin the tires they free roll like a skateboard for a minute.. My XL rolls really smooth when I remove the pinion and roll it around like a Tonka truck.. Im finally VERY HAPPY WITH MY XL"thumbsup"

if you wanna talk it over PM me and I'll give you a ring

Its really not that bad. I used a 3 inch cut off wheel at work and just went one tooth at a time. I DID NOT spend a lot of time on the mod and just used my finger nail to drag across the back of the gear tooth to check for high spots. Ton of 6S runs later and all is good still.

Oho I forgot to mention ... Check for light gaps with the spacer resting against the back of the pinion then take the spacer off and install a bearing and feel for distortion through the rotation.. mark the teeth needed and all should be well... I did my first set holding the pinion with vise-grips and its still perfect after 200 runs..

yep "thumbsup" and if you look close you'll see a difference in the mill scale color compared to the (brite) grinding marks "thumbsup"

Good stuff !!

You must be ready to move to the desert by now huh SteveO...

I did follow BHB's instructions and check for gaps with a bearing and a spacer. My point is it doesn't need to be dead nuts like it was in a mill or cnc machine. I got it close and it has worked great for me.

That's awesome BHB! I bought a cutting wheel yesterday for my Dremel only to find out I can't find all the chucks and stuff for it after I moved... Planning to get another chuck today. Does anyone have a suggestion for a Dremel attachment to do final clean up on the pinion?

Can you do a video of hand holding and that way i can touch the screen and feel the confidence ray through to me as i Dremel my gears?
(sarcasm doesn't work on forums)

And how many bearings? :)

lol 6 in a month BEFORE the mod and only two sense then.. The Boca green bearings did a excellent job enduring the abuse of the dirt.. I think NOT using grease was a HUGE help with my outer bearing life span. "thumbsup" Boot Please

I use a New Non Reinforced THIN cut off when at the end to give it a crisp edge then hit it with a dremel polishing stone at the end to check for high spots ( Shiny vs. mill scale)
BUT
Pro Mod Steve is right Guys...
Its not rocket science.... Take your time and you XL WILL be better than ever"thumbsup"
I did my first set with needle nose vice grips and a cut-off wheel and I've got 200 flawless runs on them.. I actually haven't used a set that mod with my bench set-up lol... I did that so I could hook-up the XL community ... If I had to do it once I wouldn't hesitate to do them by hand "thumbsup"
