Must watch video hd gear mod

I was posting a typical email that I get daily... I was reinforcing the fact ... that it is a problem and a STICKY should be made...
Revised ..new thread... whatever.. it's just a obvious problem that Axial denies...
Sorry for the irritancy and confusion "thumbsup"

I tried putting the factory HD gears in a hot racing front diff housing and it was bound to the point nothing would spin. Threw the gears in a lathe and 5 seconds later it was all good. Thanks for coming up with this mod. Genius idea!

Thank-you BUT I just happen to be one of the first to encounter it with a Vanquish... The HD gears toasted 3 bulkheads / 3 rear axles which made me think the Axial (SOFT) plastic was the issue so I bit the bullet and bought a vanquish with a new set of gears... No Go .... Couldn't even turn it...

So I contacted Harley from Vanquish and tried out his suggestion and lost my diff and pinion bearings... Then I figured out the solution..

After 50 + emails to Axial along with the video and fact -findings they blew me off and said I'm Crazy....:flipoff: Maybe so Scott but the XL Community will know about it !!!"thumbsup"

Honestly the hazing about the mod on this forum has been the biggest battle...First ; my threads were pulled because of a complaint of selling services for free with out a 100 $ donation to be a vendor... SO I spent the 100 $ so I could offer my free service.. and plan on donating next year because it is a awesome resource for US !!!
I've modified over 100 pinion mods for free and done what I could for the community.. But every negative push has made me stronger... I've got some BIG things coming soon guys "thumbsup" I WISH I could share them BUT all in good time "thumbsup""thumbsup""thumbsup"

I was wondering how a needle bearing like this would work as a pinion bearing with the mod and a few shims: 15x21x12,HK1512,Metric, Needle Bearings
Are the tolerances not tight enough, or would it just munch continuously on dirt and explode in a few runs?

I think it's worth a shot.. The only downfall that I could see is that it won't work in a aftermarket bulkhead that has a divider/guide for the spacer.."thumbsup"
I'm looking into getting some bushings milled up that will eliminate the need for the HD mod & bearings.."thumbsup"

I once looked into this and I don't think it will work, both with that type of bearing and the brass bushing. The main problem is what will happen at the contact point between the back of the pinion and the needle bearing/bushing. It will be a continous grinding because only the pinion will rotate. That's the meaning of the inner regular bearing's ring, to rotate together with the pinion and not have friction in that area. And this is valid also for the c clip

You have NO clue what a HD gear is or what the issue is... Go figure something else out...

I can only hope you can't understand my very imperfect english. Otherwise I can't wait to see a needle bearing or a brass bushing working for more than a few minutes without a bearing at each end

Well guys ... I hate to say it but... I'm done doing the BHB MOD for the summer... Between daily hospital visits and the disappointment of messing up a mod and costing me one of my pinions... along with the shipping, mess materials and time.. 120 free mods ... I've got to take a break... Sorry guys... I'll be happy to offer my services this fall when my life settles back down...

Good luck taking care of everything. Sometimes life happens and derails whatever plans we have, I hope you get back on track soon.

Thanks for the kind words!! My life's a little to unpredictable right now to uphold my next day promise...
If anyone wants the modification done without a immediate return I'll still help them out... I was sorta disgruntled about messing up a pinion and costing me one of mine... I was able to make it work for myself but felt terrible about sending it to a brother basher..

Being new to the Yeti XL, is it reasonable to assume the problem with gears is not as likely to show up if I'm only running 4S?

O it definitely will.... if it's binding by hand 50 RPM'S imagine 2,500...
After my 2nd set of HD gears I swore off 6s ... and I think it was 10runs MAX and the pinions were flopping around...on strictly 4s..

The mod in a must if you wanna keep your XL...

Thanks so much for getting my gears done in spite of everything you have going on. Your a solid dude! Good luck with everything going on, I'll keep your family in my thoughts.

I built a brand new kit and ran it on 4s only in my front yard and started having gear noise show up on the second pack.

Thanks man an for your patience "thumbsup" !
BTW I wanted to let you know that your pinions weren't the ones that I messed up on lol .. they for a YouTube guy

The mod in a must if you wanna keep your XL...

Stupid question #1 --> Does "the mod" involve taking the pinion from AXIC3339 and turning it down like the video shows - or - can I use the original pinion, turn it down, and get the same result (I know nothing about these gear sets except the OEM is standard cut and the AXIC3339 is beveled - correct?)

Stupid question #2 --> Will I need two sets of AXIC3339 - one for the front, and one for the rear (~$75 for two sets)?

Stupid question #3 --> besides getting AXIC3339 (either one or two sets), and grinding it like the video shows, is there anything else I must need to make this truck reliable?

Thank you
