Cat's Rock Rey

Saw the Rock Rey and instantly fell in love. My plan is for this truck to be a multipurpose rig, it will be able to crawl but also go fast. Granted I know it won't excel at either but it will be a fun rig all the same.

Mods so far:
1. Castle Mamba Monster X
2. Brood Racing 550 Can 2600KV Sensored Motor
3. Proline Denail wheels w/STRC rings
4. Proline Hydrax Tires w/Proline single stage foams
5. Castle Connect harness
6. Fast Eddy Bearings
7. Twin Hammers locker for center diff.
8. 1 mil diff fluid in the front
9. Savox 1210SG waterproofed servo
10. Incision rear top links

Some Planned things:
1. Free spool winch
2. KOH rear light bar
3. SSD Third Member

Going on a trail run tomorrow, should have some photos and videos to post :mrgreen:

How tall are the PL single stage foams? Do they fit the hyrax good? On PL site, it says there 4.6" tall and that seems way to small.

I would say they are a bit small for the tires. I can measure the difference/take some more pictures tonight, for my uses though it is perfect. Nice and firm for side hilling and go fast but enough space to allow the tires to conform to rocks.
 
I ended up ordering some CI DW tall foams. But Id still like to know how tall and how they fit, for future projects (if its not to much trouble).
 
I have the dual stage PL foams in TSL's and they are probably to stiff so ill be swapping in some CI double deuce. I have them mounted to blue 101 methods but that increase in weight has me worried so I ordered some of the axial methods that are plastic. I was going to run my hyrax but felt they are too soft of a tire for a fast rig and all that power will shred them. Actually the soft hyrax with those stiff foams may work out pretty well.

Cat, how do you like the locked up front? How much did it affect steering? Im very curious to see what setup all you's guy's with more knowledge than me end up trying and finding whats best. gearing, locking, maybe a slightly longer front shock for a gain in clearance? I think they can be turned into a pretty capable "get up anything rig." The more I think about it I may take out the mamba monster X w/ Holmes hobbies PP 3500 of my bomber and throw it on the rock rey. Lastly, are any of the lesser known but awesome quality guys who make stuff selling any Rey parts?

Alright let me dig into this.

First off u was also worried about the weight of the wheels so I decided to go with Proline Denails but when I got them they still had a bit of heft due to the beadlock rings. Overall though I'm happy with my purchase.

In terms of the locked drive-train. The rear is locked from the get go but I decided to lock the center diff which definitely helped. The front I put in 1mil diff fluid which doesn't lock the front and for crawling it is usable but I'm going to get locking diff paste to replace it. Locking the center and putting heavy fluid in the front will negatively affect the high speed handling, again not my focus with this truck.

For the tires they are actually pretty stout, at least on 2S on full chat the tires don't balloon too bad, haven't tried them on 3S so I really can't give you too much at this time.

Finally I though about going with the PP 3500KV but I didn't want much more speed since at stock 2800KV the pinion is at 12 when the lower limit is 10 so it wouldn't give me much room to gear down. I decided to go with the Brood Racing 2600KV motor for more torque especially since I have more room to gear up. Though I have seen a lot of guys running the PP 3500 with good success at least at the U4RC level.
 
I just put together some 2.2 VP 105s with CI DW tall foams and hyrax. I just weighted them:

Stock maxxis: 7.60oz
VP/DW/hyrax: 8.65oz.

So only 1oz more each wheel, which isn't much at all. Plus hyrax are smaller then stock. So I wouldn't worry about adding aluminum rims. "thumbsup"
 
It looks great! I can't wait to see it run. I'm really digging these things.

Are the stock trailing arms plastic? If so, do you think they'll hold up or will they bend like Axial's?

How do you like the Brood motor so far?
 
Yes TA are plastic. I haven't heard of any bending. JEC is making TA for them or losi has there aluminum verison but Im not a fan of them.

Im also curious about the brood motor.

Why don't you like the losi aluminum trailing arms?
 
1. There aluminum.
2. There kinda ugly.
3. Uses losi long rod ends.
4. Uses 3mm grub screws.
5. I've already seen them break.

JEC racing uses SS or 7075 which is stronger and both slide good over rocks. And he uses revo rod ends (8-32 aka 4mm) that are frenched into the TA.

Makes sense. I just contacted JEC about their 7075 version.

Sounds about right. SS is more. I'll probably go with 7075 too since I dont think it needs anymore weight in the rear. If you want to see what they look like, look up Rjohn929 RR. He went with SS but they'll look the same.

Look up carter fab and machine on IG. He's working on aluminum panels. I think barndog racing is going to make some aluminum ones too. But I haven't seen any different bodys yet.
