I went to a new, local RC dirt oval to watch the racing. My local off-road track closed down a couple of years ago and I've been missing the competition ever since. Oval doesn't look as fun as off road because there are no jumps, but it still looked like a lot of fun so I decided to give it a shot. Instead of using my Associated SC10 to jump into the open modified class I decided to buy a Slash and start out in the stock class. I can't pass up an opportunity to buy a new RC! :lmao: Plus, I have never owned a Slash.

I wanted the black chassis and I love the Raptor body so that's what I chose. Plus, I've been wanting to get a second battery for my nephew since I bought him a Slash for his birthday last year. This truck is so well done by Traxxas. The body and bumper are awesome and Traxxas is stepping up the scale realism. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the body or sell it.

A brand new, wrapped box. Exciting!

As a Chevy fan, even I can say this is a good looking truck! It's a shame it will never get driven in this state.

It cracks me up how many tags Traxxas puts on their vehicles. But that's also a sign of them being such a great company. They lay everything out for newbies.

Here she sits. The base to my Mudboss dirt oval track race car.

Now I wait for the body. I am having the graphics custom designed. After that he will print the wrap and install it on the body before shipping it.

I'm also going to install a few durability upgrades that are within this track's rules.

Does the track allow the use of the traxxas LCG chassis as that would offer a good increase in performance.

Not in the stock class. They allow it in the next class up which is 13.5T.

I'm not convinced an LCG chassis would be a benefit though. It's a low grip track. I think the body roll might actually help by giving more weight, and therefore, more traction on the right rear tire. I could be completely wrong though.

Is there a restriction for the style of body used, or do they have separate classes for truck bodies and car bodies?

Use the reply button. Not the quote button.

That depends on the track. My track allows the Mudboss or any other Northeastern style dirt modified body. There's also late model bodies and a sprint class.

Reply to the OP. Quote anybody else in the thread that is not the OP. If not it gets confusing. And for the love of mankind, do not quote photos! That's my rule of thumb.

So would Bombers be able to run with the trucks, or be a separate class?
A Bomber would make a horrible oval racer since it has solid axles. I guess it would, technically, be allowed in the modified category though.

LOL, I should have clarified, by Bomber, I mean bomber body class, like Parma's '55 chev, '56 Ford, etc.

That's why I was asking about the different bodies. Some dirt oval races only allow sprints, modifieds, or late models, and they'll run a Bomber (body) Class separately.

Oh haha! I was thinking you were insane.

I don't think those qualify at this track, but I'm not sure.

in mudboss you should be able to use the lcg chassis. at my local track they use a hobbywing just stock 13.5 blinky setup and lcg chassis. everything else has to be stock.

the bomber class is cool, but they switched over to a bomber "knockout" style class. anything faster than 10 sec around the track and the lap doesn't count.

people think oval is easy.. its not haha. good luck to ya bud! mudboss is a fun class!

I believe this new track doesn't follow Mudboss rules exactly. The stock class is the Traxxas XL5 and Titan motor with the regular, non LCG chassis. The 13.5T class can have a high or LCG chassis.

I don't think oval will be easy at this track. It's not high grip. It looks like a ton of fun though!

Thanks!

First round of mods to the stock Slash. The rules limit upgrades to just a few Traxxas or RPM parts. I chose the aluminum parts from Traxxas. I got the caster blocks, steering blocks and rear axle carriers. The aluminum bell crank is on the way.

Aluminum parts against aluminum parts aren't a good idea, but I broke my own rule here. We'll see how they hold up. The tolerances between the aluminum parts on one side were close and nothing needed to be done. The other side had a larger gap so I installed a PTFE washer between the two parts on the top. Only one washer would fit.

I'm waiting for the bell crank. Then I have to rebuild the shocks with lighter weight oil and down travel spacers. Shocks are one of my least favorite tasks and I haven't had much uninterrupted free time so I'm putting them off. I'm not the best shock bleeder and my lack of patience works against me in situations like that. So I'm procrastinating.

If steel cvd's are legal...you can get a pair from rcmart for $40(the XO1 grade steel cvd's...work better than mip) vs $60-$80 everywhere else

Traxxas plastic shocks are some of the best in the business. Super smooth and durable. With aluminum caps, they are pretty bulletproof.

I agree. I love Traxxas shocks. I did get the aluminum caps so they'll go on when I tackle the rebuild of the shocks.

get you the Tamiya shock bleeder. you could bleed 4 shocks in 10 minutes or less. works with diffs too!

I have one. Great tool!

I was more specifically talking about getting the right amount oil/rebound and getting all of the shocks to match.

I'm all ears for tips to help with that.

a fine point black sharpie and a machinist ruler can do better than that.

twist the shock body at 45* angle with the cap already halfway on. put the bladder inside the cap first. make sure you have the shock shaft exposed for how much rebound you want. no rebound. no shaft. "emulsion" style shock. for oval.. good luck. each shock will be setup different!
